and, uhm, it's going to be tough. >> it's a neighborhood school. everybody walks to it. we work really hard to make it what it is. >> reporter: silverwood elementary school could be closed under the mount diablo school district's proposal to slash $1.5 million from next year's budget. 7 schools in concord and pleasant hill are targeted for potential closure under 3 possible scenarios. this list came from the superintendent's advisory committee after it ranked all the schools on several criteria, including academic performance, capacity, campus condition and operating costs. silverwood has good test scores but has declining enrollment. this woman has taken her son or daughter here for the last nine years. >> this is the closest school to where live and it is part of the reason we moved back to this area is for the schools and, you know, we settled down here to hopefully not have our children move around in schools. >> reporter: some parents say they are anxious. >> we didn't even know what school they are going to be going if they close this school down. >> reporter: and

and, uhm....... i screamed for help. >> a neighbor ran out and chased those dogs away and mr. ferguson needed 10 stitches there on his ear plus he had some bites on his arm and the top of his head. san jose animal control has taken one of the dogs and is, of course, investigating, but this is the second dog attack in about two weeks in san jose. it was december 20 a 41-year- old woman was mauled by two pit bulls outside her home on white sand drive. a neighbor also came to the rescue but she did suffer some very serious wounds. >>> oakland's new mayor got right to work today meeting with oakland police officers and she is hanging tough on one major issue. >> as long as oakland is the only city where the police officers don't pay anything into their pension, it's going to be hard to keep the numbers of police on the street that we need. >> mayor quan has a pretty full agenda on the day after her inauguration. this morning's private meeting with police is one of several she is going to have with all of the city's officers. the mayor wants to re-open negotiations with the union o

so it could be, uhm, a training issue not just for the officers but also our dispatch. but we don't know. >> reporter: the mayor has ordered a recreation of last night's scenario. they hope to track down the problem. the chief calls the system shattered. but no one can explain why it takes more than 4 years to fix it. >> i just want it fixed. and i think that's where i want to put the emphasis is when my officers pick that up radio and need to get on the air and get back up, they get back up and that's the bottom line to it so i'm not concerned about placing blame or pointing fingers. we just need to fix it. >> reporter: officers on the street say when they need backup, their radios are their lifeline. >> i just know that when an officer is in a serious situation doesn't have time to think he just has time to grab for the radio and call for cover and shouldn't have to think about how the radio going to work or not. >> reporter: the mayor says they will be testing the radio system for the next three days. at the end of that testing period, she says she wants some answers
