couple flurries in ulster and northern fairfield. wind chills anywhere from 4 below in monticello to 10 in montauk. most of us in single digits. we're actually not in the core of the coldest air. from cleveland to chicago, that's what's sweeping in tonight in to tomorrow morning. sunshine, wind gusts 15 to 30. i think the winds are peeking into the afternoon hours. see these shades of yellow and red. those are gusts that could be near 40 miles per hour during the day. they'll back off slowly after tomorrow evening and we won't hit freezing again tomorrow. the skies are mainly clear. a little stripe of light snow showers near pine plains. maybe it just brushes northern fairfield county. most of us will be dry and mainly clear for the rest of the night. system number one right here, looks like it's going to be a fairly dry system. could see light snow showers thursday morning with a few slippery spots. that doesn't look like a big deal. the key now with this system for late week is this piece of energy that's still out over the pacific

it did expand just a little bit to the north so that areas like sullivan, ulster and dutchess, you're at least prepared for a little bit of snowfall, but we do still believe in a very sharp cutoff to the north and would not be surprised if the catskills didn't get any snow at all. three to six inches take us tore coastal connecticut back into northwestern parts of new jersey. but central new jersey, the projections for 6 to 12 inches across that area still possible. parts of ocean and monmouth counties could get up to a foot and a half of snow. this will be a big one. we'll be tracking it for you and updates happening right now on twitter. i'm posting some of these weather graphics up so people can get a closeup look at them. that's weather. here's heather o'rourke with a look at your drive this morning. >>reporter: this is 495 going younld. you're leaving the lincoln tunnel, going outbound on 495. this traffic right over here is going to the eastern spur of the new jersey turnpike. traffic over here would be exiting getting onto route 3, but you can't do it. that ramp is closed down.

there is a wind advisory effect for western ulster county through 7:00 this evening. winds could gust up to 50 miles per hour through the course of the next seven hours looking like this. 20s. you notice the sustained winds hang out around 20 miles per hour. gusts over 30 miles per hour throughout the afternoon. and this regime will continue through early this evening before the wind gradually tappers off tonight. a cold bitterly cold windy afternoon. winds gusting past 30 miles per hour at times. that will send windchills, even though temperatures get in the upper 20s, it will feel like 10 during the course of the afternoon. then all eyes turn to late friday and into saturday. that's our first possibility of blockbuster winter storm. we will have many more details on the timing of that event in the full accuweather forecast a little later in the half hour. shirleen, david? >> jeff, thank you for that. >>> our coverage continues now with eyewitness news reporter michelle charlesworth. >> reporter: yeah. we are in rockville centre. everything jeff was saying is true. i

the catskills, northern ulster, northern sullivan county. but then not that many miles to the south and you're in the thick of that heavy band. snow finally ending from west to east. blowing and drifting will continue overnight. bright skies as that travel ban is lifted. we'll wake up to sunshine. radar still showing a couple of bands of snow. one just west of the city. this is trying to sneak back into new york city maybe to get us up to that record amount. also a decent band of snow over the jersey shore to parts of long island. your accuweather forecast, snow ending, it clears, melting begins during the day tomorrow, tomorrow night clear down to 24. here is your accuweather seven- day forecast. a little bit more docile than what we've dealing with. 44 on tuesday, could be a shower. definitely some big puddles to be negotiating. seasonable as we head into the latter part of the week. we can take a breather in the weather department. after having such a calm winter so far, and then, boom. >> one day. >> that will do it. >>> more to come in

a couple of snow flurries nipping at the northern ulster county just not a big problem. bigger picture will show you what's going on. one system around minneapolis, another from the gulf. if -- if they were to move into the area at the same time that would be a problem. but that's not the way we see things working out. we actually think this system coming in from minneapolis is not going to get a chance to interact with the system from the gulf because that one is going to clear through the area quicker so we'll deal with this system but right now it looks like we deal with it all by itself not jointly with the other system. but boy they get close. here's one dropping in and here's the one from the gulf. looks i know that's a good distance right there but still in the atmosphere, that's not a big distance. it's close. if you ask me, too, close to not pay attention to so i'll continue to watch it. a few flurries by the time you get into saturday as opposed to a storm on thursday night numbers across the board: now we're warming things up. 47 on monday. the groundhog comes

little snow and ice mixed there in sullivan, ork county in here -- orange county, in here towards ulster county. the rest of the area has a little drizzle on saturday morning. and then by the time we get to sunrise, that's going to be gone. we got a cloudy day on saturday, and then some big time rain comes in for sunday starting early in the morning. it'll be all rain because it'll be very warm. we're looking at temperatures this afternoon that get 92 low and mid-40s. overnight tonight you'll see where the ice and snow is here up above i-84, slippery roads here. the temperature very marginal right there for a time, but you see by afternoon we're going to be close to 50 degrees. so we're going to be looking at sunshine today, clouds in the afternoon, the high is going to be around 45. tonight this late drizzle -- light drizzle and stuff gets going closetory midnight, 30 in the far suburbs north and west and a touch of rain tomorrow morning. and then cloudy and mild so it's not a washout on saturday. sunday, well, look at how much rain we could have on sunday, an inch or two by afternoon,

tuesday and quickly after that. 34 in middletown, 28 at monticello, 37 at poughkeepsie and kingston in ulster county, 30 system at west orange, 37 on the island right now, we've had some clouds around during the day today especially from the city and points north, we cleared out for a time nicely during the afternoon but we have clouds over the area. in general, the trend will be for clearing skies overnight tonight. that will allow temperatures in the suburban areas to fall pretty low, down to 24 in sussex, 28 or so at white plains, down to freezing again in new york city before recovering to 44 during the afternoon. a few degrees warmer tomorrow than it was today. it won't feel mild because of the wind out there. than the arctic air arrives monday into tuesday. look at how far south the front sags by tuesday, that's going to open up the floodgates for a direct shot of cold air from tonight, mainly clear, down to 32, 20s in the suburbs, breezy tomorrow, 44, clear tomorrow night, first little bit of arctic air moving in, 27 in the city, much colder monday up to 32 if we're lucky. temperatures

ulster county 3 1/2 inches of snow for you. burbank with, duchess county 1.3. hield lakes in sussex county an inch and a half of snow. now the frigid winds are increasing and blowing lu the tristate area and throughout the day on wednesday. the wind gusts near 50 miles an hour and high wind advisory in effect. by thursday, we are slowly warming up and the winds dying down. in the 40s on friday. some rain showers will enter the picture on friday evening, continuing in to saturday which looks like a wash out. here's what is left of the light it is moving east, north and east of the city. few light snow showers moving throug portions of duchess county in to connecticut. near danbury and milford getting light snow and that will move to the east. right now, temperatures near freezing in the city. still upper 30s on the east end ofl long island. wind gusts are increase, up above 30 miles an hour and near 40 mile an hour wind gusts in long branch. the feels like temperatures are single digits in monticello. 14 newberg, 20 in the city and it's going to be bad tomorrow.

we may see no snow in northern ulster county. now dave price is here with another look at those local effects. very different depending on where your. >> absolutely. was interesting it's not just that we're all going to get snow. we'll all see different effects from this storm. let's take a look at inland new going to be below freezing in places like chatham and morristown and over to colts neck and high point. there you'll see six to 12 inches of snow. it will fall and stay as all snow. no mixing. but the snow will start off as dry and then get wet. that's why we're watching for possible outages as well along with high winds which could bring lines down. now we go out to the island and shore communities including the five boroughs of new york. we're watching for coastal problems as well. from fairfield to west port to sandy hook we could see coastal flooding with high tides 50 to 60 mile-per-hour winds and, again, mixed precip. of course we'll don't watch the local effects all around the tri-state area and update you through the

wind advisory in ulster county will expire in less than an hour. if you look at the futurecast wind chills, bitterly cold this evening. it actually won't feel as bad tomorrow morning with and certainly not as harsh during the afternoon hours. that's when you notice it wednesday afternoon. on to our weekend storm. there's that area of low pressure. that's the building block to our potential weekend storm which will dive down in to the south about 48 hours. we'll definitely see it on the radar as with rain and snow down south then it starts to climb toward the northeast with snow approaching dc by late couple tracks to show you. one to the north that would belt us with lots of snow. one a little farther south that would put us on the northern fringe of the snow and both options are still viable at this point. we'll let you know which way we're leaning in the accuweather forecast. the bitter wind is backing off later tonight. certainly not as harsh later tomorrow. then it's tranquil till friday night when the winter storm is certainly a possibility. i

ulster county, lots of sun for you. this is our next storm tracking across the great lakes right now. a cold front will sweep in with this, but not a lot of moisture. that's not going to change. this is not a big rainmaker. that changes, though, on tuesday night and wednesday. for this evening, it's mild, mostly cloudy. skies throughout the evening hours. great night for heading outside for dinner. nice and comfortable. you need a light jacket and mostly cloudy even at 11:00 temperatures still in the mid-40s. let's time out the rain for the next couple of days. rain-free at 2:00 today. sunny skies continue. by 9:00 mostly clear and still dry. stopping it for the morning commute on monday. quiet weather, no real problems. by 12:00, 1:00, we start to see a few showers. not everyone sees rain tomorrow. nothing intense. hit or miss in the afternoon. by the evening commute, cold front moved offshore. should be dry in the city, maybe leftover showers in suffolk county and down the jersey shore. then heading into tuesday morni

look at this, ulster not under any sort of a watch or warning. the storm is moving north now. that is so key to the snowfall totals because yesterday i was looking at it and it could not move north because there was a blocking high up there. that high is along the storm to move up to the area. we were trading snow bands, 150 miles long and if they continue to move north we'll get the totals. already 3 inches of snow in new jersey and numbers have increased. look at this, the gfs and euro, both going around 11 inches, the rpm about 21 inches, the nam in new york city, going within 3 feet of snow, 36.7. someone is going to be right, someone is going to be run. inches, and half are going 20 to 40 inches. was going on? let's take a peek in terms of the storm and signature. seattle is moving north and we are stacked with snow. a solid line. my goodness, from new jersey to carolina. if this continues to move do north these numbers will be gigantic. that's how you come up with 36 inches from the nam. i believe it will move north but take over a northeast push. my numbers factor in th

it's now calling for bigger effects south even in like our area so sullivan, ulster and dutchess doesn't look like storm. bigger effects south of new york city. the models have changed. take a look at the numbers. this is what i'm working with. they are all over the place. there's no consensus and yet i gfs says 1.8 inches of new york city. european model everybody loves that 6.2. rpn17." nam, 21." the rpm went up for whatever reason. i'll show you how i see it. this high pressure system that's up in canada right now, i believe it's going to be playing a bigger role. this high is pushing 31 on the barometer. all you need to know is that's a lot of weight in the atmosphere and it's going to exert that pressure and steer this a little further south of our area. i still think it's on track for washington, d.c. portions of the blue ridge mountains to be the bull's eye. that's where you find the bull's eye of the storm. when i factor in what i just showed you there, i throw out the high one with the nam of 21", more credence to the numbers pushing it down to the south. i'm going to say 4 to 8

in fact, a high wind advisory in effect for ulster county with gusts expected upwards of o50 miles per hour. and if that's what's happening, you could imagine the winds are going to be strong else where, as well. all right, so, the feels-like temperature by tonight at around midnight is going to be about six degrees and about 1 below zero in monticello. as we wake up tomorrow, 8 below zero in monticello and 4 in the city and then tuesday at noon, 1:00, it's not going to feel much better. going to feel like it's in the teens as we go to sleep tomorrow night, the situation doesn't change, again. 11 in danbury and 12 in south brunswick and 12 in cherry hill. that's what we're dealing with. what to expect. temperatures in the teens tonight and tomorrow. bright, bitter and blustery. don't let the sun fool you. next big issue is this storm. right now it's all the way in the pacific northwest. pushing on to the western shores of the continental united states. two scenarios. one is a close to the coast call. that could bring major snow. major snow. friday, saturday, timing not specific yet. tr

to notice that till you head out the door tomorrow wind advisory will expire in a couple hours in ulster county. futurecast wind 15-mile-per-hour range will actually be a little higher tomorrow morning but noticeably higher in the afternoon hours as we get above freezing for the first time in a couple days and doesn't feel so bad in the afternoon with increasing clouds. on to the weekend storm threat. the actual building block for that is a storm that's coming in in the pacific northwest and it's finally coming ashore. we leave that window of fantasy forecasting to more reality because now our computer model should be able to handle what this storm is doing. in two days this storm should be in the deep south. then it starts to move up the appalachians and probably question is does it take that northern track and we get belted with many inches if not feet of snow, or is it going to slide farther east then there's less snow for us? both scenarios still on the table as of this here's what you need to know. the bitter wind is backing off later tonight. it's then it's tranquil tomorrow night.

of an issue as you get into that area and then north of that my real -- northern suburbs sullivan, ulster and dutchess, may not, be much of a storm for you at all. know the shore like will get really hit hard with winds. it's all about snow bands versus dry slots. that's the key to the amount of snow that you get at your house and if you catch one of these snow bands over your area these are not faint of heart. these are snow bands that exist or that spread out for about 100 miles. they are big. you're going to get big snow totals if you get the snow band over your area. if you catch the dry slot, you're going to catch smaller numbers and that's what we're starting to see. this is the radar picture. i wanted to take the satellite off because sometimes the cloud cover can mix in with the snow. upper level snow flurries making their way into new jersey. the bigger picture shows you what's going on. remember i said the snow band versus the dry slot? snow bands are impressive. they extend for like 100 miles. but then you have -- you have so many dry slots right now. i just don't understand ho

it will continue in the northern suburbs with the snow never reaching northern sullivan, ulster or dutchess county. it will be super close there. by late morning snow is stacking up. by early afternoon a couple of i think south of the area there could be more. then the height of the storm in the midafternoon hours into the first part of saturday night we could have snow bands coming in. this could throw off accumulations. you could have thunder snow and snow rates that are two inches an hour and you will stack up the most snow and the most likely would be this area here through central new jersey. then the storm pivots out. see how it weakens after midnight then pulls offshore. i think this is a little slower. by that time i think the snow has moved out. the computer models continue to blast the dc area and put us on the edge. this in particular is a few inches in the new york city area and this has 5 to 10 inches. our computer forecast is close to this. 6-inch storm in new york city. lighter to the north and heavier to the south. i am stilling a louing for snow in central and southern new
