the book i just finished on the legacies of civil war, i spent a lot of time on ulysses grant. his papers are all published. they've been published. i think it's 73 volumes of his letters. but what you realize and it's not unique to me, but what a group of historians the last four or five years have realized reading those letters in light of the world we're in, is that the image almost everyone has in this room of grant from school? history is entirely wrong that he wasn't a drunk. he wasn't someone in the white house was dominated by corruption, but actually cared very deeply about civil rights and still doesn't change his failures, a president, but it changes the ways. think about the presidency. the modern presidency evolving, because here you have a president who wants to do the right. i think it's pretty clear he does. he spent hours every day reading letters written by southerners, southern republicans and freedmen and women describing the horrors of their condition, describing the racism in the south and how little power he had within his own party to act upon that. it a
