there are reports that at least 13 people have been killed by a gunman at the umpqua community college. it's about three hours south of portland, oregon. the county sheriff says it was a lone gunman. he apparently got into a shootout with campus police and according to the governor, the 20-year-old male is dead. we're also expecting to hear from president obama sometime in the coming hour. we're told that should happen in about 20 minutes or so. he has been pushing for tougher gun control legislation. he has brought this up numerous times after many of the mass shootings we've seen here for quite some time. this has been a staging area for family and the people in that community to gather. let's check in with alan. what is the scene there at the fairgrounds right now? i can only imagine so many people are still waiting for answers. >> yeah. really heartbreaking scene as you might imagine. just listening to a young lady describing being in the building and hearing shotses wandserring if it's another school shooting and then hearing more shots. she described -- she's just sitting out on

umpqua is about a mile from the road up here. the only people coming in and out of what would be a beautiful community is law enforcement and they have started to let a couple of residents through. i spoke to a state trooper. i asked him if he had seen anything like this in his life. he said not to this extent. the fbi, the douglas county sheriff, many other law enforcement agencies are here. it's only a matter of time before we see what happens a mile up the road. >> jacob soboroff, thank you. sadly, campus shootings in american have become all too common. there have been 142 incidents which a gun was fired on a school campus in this country since the massacre in newtown in december of 2012. this is the fourth shooting on a college campus just since the start of this school year in august. we get details from our justice correspondent pete williams. >> reporter: the scene unfolding in oregon has become all too familiar. another mass shooting again on a school campus. it's actually the 41st school shooting just this year. with gu

now umpqua community college in roseburg, oregon. preliminary death count, 13. 13 people are reported dead now. at least 20 more wounded after a gunman opened fire on the community college in that small town 70 miles south of eugene, oregon. police responded to 911 calls. at 10:30 pacific time. 1:30 east coast time. they located the shooter. there was an exchange of fire and the shooter died in the melee. no officers were injured. governor of oregon has identified the gunman as a 20-year-old man. one student witness told msnbc that he was white. white male armed with a small caliber handgun, according to witnesses. pete williams is reporting that federal officials believe the gunman may have been armed with multiple guns. witness accounts, including posts on social media, pin a harrowing scene, including one woman who tweeted, quote, students are running everywhere. holy god! moments ago president obama showed anger and frustration as he addressed the tragedy from the brady press room. doesn't that tell you something? he was shot by

umpqua community college is just a beautiful campus.idyllic really and it's a shame this has to happen. >> what about the student body? what are they like? >> well, they're great, like you've mentioned before on cnn. the age is a little built older, average age about 38. we have about 3,000 active or full-time students, 14,000 part time. since the economy has changed a lot, a lot of people are going back and changing and getting reeducated for other opportunities. so it's an older, more mature student body. but, like i said, it's a small town. everybody knows everybody. >> yeah. >> it's just a tragedy this has to happen. >> many community colleges there are older people, people who go back to school, they have kid or they started their career and go back to school. it's pretty normal. joe, you have been on the scene of shootings before. are you worried about the notoriety that these shooters seek? the sheriff clearly was. he said i'm not going to name this guy, not going to give him the notoriety that he wanted. >> you'll see that a lot
