there are 24 children thought to be unaccounted for.wn up in shelters but we do know there are still children missing. no bodies have been recovered and no survivors have been recovered. they're still working hard and will work all night. everything is destroyed here. it reminds me of the tsunami of northern japan. but you see good people, military people, doctors, nurses, firemen, fire women, policemen and women all coming together to try to rescue, and here it has been a crushing disappointment that they have not been able to pull anyone out of the rubble of the elementary school and we do know there are some victims who have perished. seven children have already been pronounced dead who were in the school when the tornado came. we always talk about tragedy that sometimes you say it was really fortunate that it didn't happen in the middle of the day. if this had happened later these children would have been out of school. it's so tragic that these kids were still inside the school building. >> it really is. it is very tragic. and one

how many did you say was unaccounted for? >> last report we had was seven. >> yes, that's still the number there that we've got that's unaccounted for. we are hoping and we've got some indication that those seven people probably weren't even in the area, on vacation or not at the home at the time, so as soon as we get that confirmation, we'll surely let the public know that. >> that would certainly be good news. how much damage has been done to people's homes? have you been able to assess the big picture? >> i went right down in the heart of it today and i mean, what you see out here, what you see behind me right now, is just the small beginning of it. there's homes -- homes that are just -- they're not there. i mean, they're gone. we had a list of the 17 or -- yeah, 17 regular homes, 19 mobile homes that were destroyed and when i say destroyed, there was nothing there but a pad, and then we had numerous others. we had a total of 97 homes out of 110 that suffered severe damage. >> 97 out of 110. i understand a number of them

we also know that there is that rescue task force here looking for the 14 people still unaccounted for the habitat for humanity homes are. listen to the sheriff's description of that community. >> there is about 110 homes in that residential area. and there is a number of them that are fairly new within the last five years that were built from habitat for humanity. i have not been out there myself, but i've been told, most all of that is in heavy damage to totally destroyed conditions out there. it was a -- a war zone i guess like we saw in the past with hurricanes from the coast. it's -- it was bad from what they have told me. >> reporter: listen, every element of the story is tragic. but if you have ever seen a family receive that habitat for humanity home, the keys to the home, they actually worked on it to help to build, you remember that facial expression, you can only imagine their facial expree expressions now that those homes are destroyed. >> any word on the warning these families got? we're looking at live pictures and some of these homes look as though it's a concrete slab u

we have some conflicting reports on how many students are unaccounted for. i have talked to some local law enforcement that are responsible for that school, and they're even unaware how many children are unaccounted for. a lot of churches have opened their doors. a lot of shelters have opened their doors. and so families are somewhat, you know, separated right now, which presents a challenge, but the good news is the shelter doors are open, so the unattended children, we're still trying to get a hard count on. >> quickly because i know you have to take cover. we can hear the weather behind you. what is the procedure in place to make sure that families are reconnected to one another? i know you pointed out the shelter, but do you have a registration where folks can catch up with their loved ones and all get together? >> well, there's an oklahoma highway patrol hotline, and at every shelter, there's cell phone numbers posted and hotline numbers posted at every shelter and every relief organization that is bringing people in. so the numbers are getting out the

as you mentioned, seven people still unaccounted for. that number is down from earlier this morning when there were 14 unaccounted for. the local sheriff said several people were found with family and friends and that is what he hoped happened with the seven people still missing. the death toll remains at six people. total devastation here. we've been moved back from the worst part of the damage because of that search effort and the clean-up effort that is right now underway. as you mentioned, that neighborhood that was devastated here was built largely by habitat for humanity. and crews are still going through the rubble, trying to find anybody that still may be missing. the national weather service is, its initial estimate is that this tornado in granbury was between 166 and 200 miles per hour. as we walk around here, we can see the winds just, not just ripped homes off their foundation but left concrete slabs where homes used to stand. we see these tornadoes. ef-1's, ef-2's, and other areas where we've seen mobile homes suffer an cred

that is what we're seeing at moore, oklahoma today as people remain unaccounted for. we have seen the number of dead increasing quite a rapid pace. sean, one of the things that stuck out in that press conference is that people have to register their storm cellars with either the local municipality or the state. so they are going through and matching those records to see who had storm cellars so they can try and locate those people. let's face it, this is part ofre to storms. they know what they are doing when it comes to tornadoes here in oklahoma. they are going through the storm cellars that are registered and make sure that people haven't been missed. air traffic was suspended by the news helicopters for a brief portion of the afternoon so that the first responders could go door to door and listen for signs of life. that is still something that is happening right now. sean, it's really sort of difficult to describe. i'm trying my best, but i don't know if it is fully translating through the camera. it's hard breaking and terrifying all at the same time. >> sean: sa
