what happened at unc was egregious, singular, awful but things like what happened at unc happen everywhere because all of these athletes are working under the same pressure. they're working their 50 hour week with sports trying to make their way in a classroom so friendly faculty and academic counselors find ways to keep them alive to keep them afloat. but all the while they learn that their academic experience, their intellectual interests and so on are subordinated to the athletic demand of the athletic machine. that's something that mary witnessed firsthand in her seven years in the academic support program. >> we called it scheduled engineering and were really good at it. so we would play an estimate how many credits the young folks, many muslim basketball and football needed to be eligible what the gpa that was, what they needed and so it was just this game of schedule engineering and eligibility and really wasn't about an education at all. it was about being an athlete, being an athlete first and maybe being a student, maybe, second third or fourth. that's how the system here is at c

that whole region of the country, nobody is better at training those kinds of doctors than unc is. but north carolina republican legislators recently proposed new anti-abortion legislation that would put unc at risk of losing accreditation for their med school training facilities. by passing a new state law, which would have limited what doctors were allowed to learn or teach or practice doing while they were doing their training at unc. i think when they realized they might be unaccrediting their star state medical school, republican legislators in north carolina backed off that provision they had been pushing. but they're not giving up all together. and what they are moving ahead with now is going to look equally awkward on a bumper sticker. north carolina republicans already tried to change the law, to force women to have medically unnecessary ultrasounds if they wanted to get an abortion in that state. you might remember that ultrasound law from north carolina was struck down as unconstitutional earlier this year. well now what they want to do is not only try again to force you

she was a junior at unc. perhaps you are experiencing similar family moments on campus this weekend and on franklin treat. life was pretty good. in the months prior to my graduation, i did everything i could to land a job in the machinery of hollywood. my dream, dating back to when i was a kid, was to follow in the footsteps of walt disney. i had always been fascinated by stories well told and how disney leveraged technology in the interest of making them better. for most of my senior year here, i wrote to every executive i could in hollywood, the sum total of five months of letter writing and phone calling, was a cavalcade of no's, if i was lucky to get a reply. and one informational and review. the informational interview was to be conducted at universal studios a few days after my graduation. i was not off to a great start but i was hopeful that things would improve. soon after my graduation ceremony ended at kenan stadium that sunday, i kiss my girlfriend goodbye and gave big hugs to my mother and father.
