this morning they were working in the school's underground utility room when a fiery explosion sent them running for cover. little did they know this outdoor stairwell was padlocked shut. they were left with one option. shout for help. >> call 911 as quick as possible. it could be a life-or-death situation. kevin: a transformer explosion startled earl. >> i heard voices. people were screaming for help. kevin: daily who works next door sprinted to find four maintenance men behind the fenced-in stairwell. thick smoke filled the air. padlock kept them tracked. he dialed 911. >> there was a roof over the top of the fence. there was no way to get away from the fire and the smoke that was coming. one of the guys back there had burps all over his face. kevin: firefighters had to use thermo cameras to rescue one worker from the basement utility room described to us as a dark smoky maze. paramedics took three of the men to locate hospitals each with critical or serious injuries. a local photographer snapped this photo of one of the men receiving oxygen encinitas after the rescue. >> it doesn't ma
