underwood. and he was a notorious abolitionist. originally from upstate new york, but he lived in virginia and was a virginia judge and married to a cousin of stonewall jackson. so, underwood was a sort of fire and brimstone judge who brought the charges against him. and, but, yeah, i talk to people and most people have not even heard of this. underwood was the most hated individual in virginia in the 19th century. ironically, lee was the most beloved figure in 19th-century virginia. you have the two polls right there. right there.les one thing that people often forget as well, in addition to not knowing about treason, is that america was extremely divided in june of 1865. one of the things that we were often taught, and if you watch the ken burns civil war, which by the way i love to we often get the sense at appomattox that we buried as a hatchet. that they came together and let bygones be bygones and this was the moment of reconciliation. but actually to months later in june, the united states government was pursuing treason cas
