i want to talk about the unesco, all of this work you are doing around the world. i want to start by asking you. what time inspired you to do all of this? >> as a child, my first touch with conflict of war was with my cousins. my cousin went to the vietnam war when i was a little kid. he came back. he even lived in my room. he was totally changed by the war. and its affected him to this day. so, i think that that understanding fuelled me. and then there was a bunch of incidents in my community. i lived on east 49th street. the black panther used to have a stoop at the end of the corner, they would invite me to the breakfast program. i remember going by and seeing their building blown up and then, behind my grandmother's was the sla, actually s where they caught the sla. >> family for patty hearst? >> yeah. i remember walking through that building as a kid, and i think that started to affect me and then with the birth of the gangs in los angeles, and seeing them move from, i think at the time it was like the brims to the parus to the crips and the bloods and, of cou

we have the only unesco city of literature in 2008, we're proud of that designation, we are embedded in what is known as the creative corridor here in eastern iowa and we're proud of that as well. again, the writers drive a lot of that, we have had tennessee williams, we have had writers who everybody has heard of come to our workshop, and we have writers on staff that people would know the names. we're also very well known for an international writing program, which was an offshoot of the writers workshop, when paul engel, one of the original directors of the iowa writers workshop, retired from his job of directing that workshop, he and his wife decided to start the international writing program, which every year brings international writers to iowa city, we have had several writers -- several of the writers from around the world who have part mated in that program, have gone on to win nobel prizes in literature. we're very proud of the roots and the traditions of the arts, the humanities, literature, here in iowa, in fact, we're so proud of that because we were the first institutio

the scale of hisrt grew with such works as a mural at harrd university and "the wall ofhe sun" for unesco in pas. as his work grew in size, miro continued what he termed "a process of simplification." he stated, "little by little, i have managed to reach a point at which i use no more than a small number of forms and colors this process found a culminating expression in his eightoot-high painting "femme," the maquette for the tial gallery's tapestry. miro entered the project with much enthusim, stating, "i'll go into this and fight it through with everything i have." over my months, the tapestry took shape in his imagination. finally, in 1976 it was set down rapidly as a maquette. in the ancient catalan city of tarragona, joan miro meets with young master weaver josep royo to discuss the transformation of his painting into a 10-meter-high tapestry. studying a photograph of the maquette, they consider how best to translate miro's art into a heavily- textured weaving, which would capture the spirit of his concept. royo has an enormous task before him. in this converted flour mill in tarrago
