[laughter] steve: the unicorn fairy. you have to believe in them. emily: this horn or something. steve: i don't know. it is interesting how the private-funding world is reaching valuations we have not seen before. we are all trying to be disciplined, within reason. since we at dfj focus on early-stage investing and growth stage investing that is way before the unicorn phase, we are fine if people want to invest at those kinds of prices. in fact, two companies, i am involved with on the board, just got offers at this new unicorn phase, so new unicorns are being born every week. but it doesn't really mean anything, per se. i think what is interesting is that the ipo window may be shutting. emily: is it closed? steve: it seems that way, certainly for biotech stocks. emily: i have to ask you about theranos. dfj was an early investor in theranos, now at a $10 billion valuation. do you stand behind theranos? would you invest

they can start getting the $500 billion the unicorns are out.were talking about how much harder it is to get this billion dollar unicorn badge. in your eyes is it a blessing or a curse? matt: it is not that hard. if you can construct the term sheet you can for the valuation where does. for some companies they deserve the billion-dollar status. many others do not. it is a vanity valuation. yvonne: let's talk about the startups down under where you are from. you have talked about the us trillion economy stuck in the stone age, literally. how are they in terms of embracing technology. do you see the shift away from mining has led to a drive and innovation? -- in innovation? great tech companies have come out, but we have had a crisis in terms of financing. they missed the first big wave of the first.com them. boom.m -- companies took a while to come out of the pipeline, but companies that have come out no how to survive. they didn't raise a ton of money from investors, but instead they are raising money from customers. yvonne: there is a bit of a b

there's some unicorns that they said they don't deserve to be unicorns.e the kinds of tech startups you think could be most at risk in. >> we're in an era where money has been essentially free. we have an entire generation of spvs and momentum funds that have just found incredible hunger from their lps to collect logos, just throw money without any diligence or board seats, without information rights into the late state companies. so we have a generation of some companies available to creep along without anybody giving anybody businesses a lot of scrutiny real and as things slow down investors become more cautious and want to peek behind the covers and see what's there. some of the companies won't be able to raise again and that's when i say there's a time of reckoning. >> does it look more like a cooling or are you looking for a full out crash? >> we see some of the companies with incredible burn rates but they don't be able to sustain anymore. we'll see layoffs and perks pulled back and i think ultimately we'll see consolidation that some of the compani

emily: there is a growing concerns about valuations of nonpublic tech companies, all of these unicorns you think these valuations are getting ahead of startups and their ability to grow? john: we are in a rare time of normalcy. good companies can go public and bad ones can't. in the private market, there is pocket of valuations that are too high, and some too low. emily: no bubble, the sky is not falling. john: this is a boom, not a bubble. it is a long boom. and that is because of the effect that these devices have had. we have 2.5 billion people carrying them around. and another billion to come. an entrepreneur can create a new product or service and in a week have a billion people using it. that is different. emily: what is also different is the amount of capital that is flowing into silicon valley. private equity firms, hedge funds, people like carl icahn. what do you make of that trend, is it creating more competition for you? beth: it is so incredibly competitive out there that we have to wake up every morning and compete to win and work with the best entrepreneurs. john: never b

i don't see it as hunting unico unicorns.t as a hunting service. >> who do you think then is to blame here? is this a case of the company pulling the wool over investors' eyes or is this a case of investors so eager to be at the ground level that they're not mastering the appropriate amount of skepticism? >> i would never accuse palantir of pulling the wool over investors' eyes. even with limited financial disclosure, you know, because the company is not publicly traded. so for many people the only way to get in is through secondary stock sales. so those have limited information just by their very nature. so, you know, which i think from my perspective, it makes the job of a reporter all the more important because it mice job to kind of figure out how the company's actually doing. >> yeah. will, you mentioned the company has been hot from the outset. what's the basis? obviously you had the founders who had done great things before and the cia connection. on the merits is there a way to try to evaluate whether their technology

the big companies doing great work, the unicorns, the small companies, you know, we're just scratchinghether you think about data visualization or virtual reality or artificial intelligence, software is where the action is. liz: uber was huge here this weekend. warren, we used it a couple of times, came in two seconds. everybody with was helpful. it really worked. >> i find, that always impresses me when somebody takes something like the car or the driver which is -- and then figures out a way to make it way more productive and change human lives for the better. i tip my hat to people that do that. fred smith did it at federal express, you know, jeff bezos has done it at amazon, they've done it at uber. you know, they didn't invent a new car or anything, they just thought about it a little different way, and i, i'm not a big user of anything -- [laughter] but, i mean, i have friend after friend after friend, you know, that -- whose lives they feel are better because of uber. liz: if uber went public, would you buy the stock? >> no. liz: why not? >> well, it would go public at a price t
