represented here today and i want to give a big shout out and shanks for the men and women in our uniforms who are protecting us. as you know, the world isn't safe. there are a lot of things that are happening. we have to always be ready and vigilant. i think a week out of our very busy calendars to recognize men and women is really an extraordinary opportunity to do that. i also want to give a very big thanks to the fleet week association. it's a great blend. and to have the chair, general, it's been wonderful to work with. he's kept us very focused on what we need to do. and then for all departments that have already been signalled out today, it's been wonderful to work with them today, both administratively and in organizing this event. this event has become international. that's why our canadian consul general is here to celebrate with us and to get that international recognition as well. you know, in addition to celebrating, in addition to having this great fun and seeing the blue angels fly and practice, the parade of ships that we have and have kids and families visit the boats that

they hold the men and women in uniform in the highest confidence. and those if you read this book about my classmates will begin to understand why. the book, as josh said, is titled "in the shadow of greatness," and it's because my generation was lucky enough to learn from the example of the generations of veterans who went before us. and if we're truly living up to their example, our service to our country is going to have to continue after we have returned home from the battlefields of the middle east, and with that i'm going close out with a final two paragraphs of my chapter. i believe it's true that to whom much is given, much is expected. as the iraq and afghanistan generation returns home, begins taking the nation's rynes or leadership, i'm reminded of exiting camp al qaeda. i like the battle names ton the stone barriers we have the exams of patriots like george washington, and teddy roosevelt, and dwight eisenhower, and john f. kennedy, who became some of our country's most esteemed leaders after returning from war, we can look at ted stephe

personnel by uniformed afghans and it's only been pretty recent in the news that the increases happened so he thought i might be able to add some background information on that. for about 6 months i was the senior advisor to the chief of police for kabul city police department in the capitol. back at the end of 2009-2010, we real laiz that we probably spent a great deal of money and effort on trying to transform the afghan army and we probably neglected the police force. and the reason that realization was so important was because the police in afghanistan are not what we consider traditional police. there's a number of police officers in the audience that could understood this. in afghanistan, the police are not so concerned with traffic control, traffic is insane in afghanistan. so you'll see traffic lights but they don't work. they are not so concerned with chasing criminals. what they are concerned with is protecting themselves and protecting the villagers. in a lot of places throughout afghanistan, the police might be the only thing that's separating the villagers from the taliban.
