perhaps a union would bargain over the number of games. if the school and union are at an impasse, would athletes go on strike? are these schools ready to make some tough decisions like cutting support to other athletic programs like lacrosse field hockey, or even raising tuition? >> the list of grievances these players presented are a list of grievances that players could have presented 5 or 10 years ago across the college community, but they haven't been addressed. whether or not you have the security of a scholarship, for how long, whether you have health insurance, stipends, transfers...we've been over this. we've been over this and over this and over this... >> it's bringing us into a sea of complete uncertainty. >> the ncaa says it will fight the northwestern effort all the way to the supreme court. >> i'm not saying the ncaa created institutional racism and poverty in the us. but the ncaa consciously benefits, because they put players from a particular background in a position where rocking the boat is lethal for their opportunities

now in the wake of the world championships the card game of bridge is fighting for legal recognition as a sport in england. the english britts union says the game promotes healthy minds and should receive government funding. so if it's a sport and if it isn't, what is? lee wellings reports. >> it's a game using cards, calculation and block played by million ons. bridge is a leisure activity and they're about to compete in the world championships in india and at whatever level. so seriously it fights for recognition as a sport in london's high court. >> it's certainly true if we recognize this sport, we would have access to funding types we don't currently have. the lottery funding will be the obvious example. it's about more than that. >> what's the actual definition of the word sports in according to the oxford english dictionary, an activity involving physical exertion and skill where they compete against others for entertainment. you use the word physical there to cause so much debate. >> there's a competitive element in the sport, which is how such games as bridge and chess are recognized as sports. they certainly have that el

this is a depiction of union soldiers playing the game, and this is a marvelous photograph of union soldiers who are taking, commemorating themselves for posterity. they have their rifl, but they also have their baseball bats. it was that important to them. the point is that the civil war introduced thousands, hundreds of thousands of young men to new levels of sporting enthusiasm, and in a sense, paved the way for the nationalization and the professionalization of the game. by the time that u.s. grant accepted robert e. lee's surrender at appomattox courthouse, on april 9, 1865, more young men had played baseball than ever before. and when they went home, they were prepared to participate in the sport itself, but also, to be fans of the sport. the baseball clubs after the civil war flourished as never before. and then they began the steps to professionalization. and that's when going to talk about right now, after 1865. baseball clubs begin playing a much more rigorous schedule, especially the popular ones. in a series of games that would take the teams all over, not only the east, but the
