union pacific has a team dedicated to track maintenance.they expect the rails twice a week and infant it had been inspected less than 24 hours ago, that area before the derailment happened and crews did not find anything wrong. let's take a look at the incredible images that we are seeing here from sky fox. if we zoom in you can see the railcar, 3309. that's the one that derailed and was in alameda creek overnight and they said they wanted to get it out by four p.m. and they met their goals. they had crews working on that entire excavation process and able to get it back out of the water. in terms of track maintenance with union pacific railroad. they do it twice a week and actually a crew was sent out yesterday morning at five a.m. to check that area because there was a weather alert. we have been having these weekend storms and it is really saturated the area and had the crew went out at five in the morning they didn't see anything wrong. and then an hour before the derailment another ace train was able to pass through and had no issues e

so, this is right now a union pacific investigation. and the spokesperson for that agency indicated to us that they have not yet heard from the ntsb and usually if the ntsb were to be taking over they believe they would have already done that. union pacific says preliminarily they believe it is a mudslide that swept the tree on to the tracks causing this ace train to derail. you have the one car that you're looking at above. that one is hard to see from our vantage point is barely up there on the edge of that ravine up there. still upright and you have the other rail car that fell into the alameda creek below. this was the number ten ace train from san jose to stockton. the last train of the night was carrying 214 commuters. as it wound its way through niles canyon and derailed at around 7:30. about a mile west of sunol. that one car stayed upright and the other fell about 50 feet into alameda creek, which is swollen from the recent rain. that car flooded while first responders raced to save the people inside. everyone survived, but nin

union pacific has lifted one of the derailed cars and placed it back on the tracks. take a look at the video we shot about 10 minutes ago. the crane approached from the west and hooked that up railcar which weighs about 50 tons, swung it over and lowered it right back on the tracks. the one in the water should be lifted out a short time after that barring any major complications this scene is set to be clear by 4 p.m. the view from chopper 5 shows the scale of the disaster earth gave way after a weekend of rain. the passenger train going about 30 miles an hour weighing 250 tons was no match. to give you sense of the force of the impact, you see that barren patch of dirt up there? that is where the earth gave way and the mud slide covered the tracks. the train smashed through that pile of dirt, plowed through and kept on going for another 100 yards, before the front railcar toppled into the creek. >> it's going to what it did. it's going to bulldoze into the mud as far as it can. but as it plows into the mud, it's also going to get raised up as the mud goes underneath

as union pacific crews removed this derailed altamonte express from the creek. according to ace officials, 214 people aboard the san jose based train heading to stockton monday night around 7:30. officials say that is when the train traveling 35 miles an hour in a 40 miles per hour zone collided with a tree and mud slide that was on the track. that caused two of the five cars to derail. >> when the train stopped you could see mud pretty much covering half of the wheels of several railcars there. >> 9 people injured with four in serious condition. this morning crews used cranes to remove the other derailed car. a similar tactic that they used before. crews have been working in the hillside where the mud may have come from and removed other debris on the tracks. u.s. congressman said thank you to the crews and to see the damage firsthand. >> it looks like something out of a movie when you look at the scene and when i heard a train derail in the canyon, i thought we would be hearing of massive loss of life. >> now thankfully it didn't happen. 200 people walked away

union pacific now says the front of the train hit a mud slide that also contained a downed tree not a lone tree like was initially reported. so the train hit a mud slide. it derailed, slid off the embankment into the creek where it's partially submerged. heavy equipment is about 100 yards away removing railcars one by one transporting them away. it will take much of the day today to get to that dangling railcar and once they do, crews will drag the car back up the hill, set it on either the tracks or another flatbed and haul it away. this all happened a 7:30 last night on "ace" train 10 from san jose to stockton. here is francisco castillo with union pacific to talk about the clean-up effort. >> i don't think any derailment is an easy clean-up i think every derailment has its different, you know, variables to determine whether or not how quick they can actually get that cleared up. but we have the equipment in place to be able to get the tracks clear as soon as possible. >> reporter: now, a spokesman for ace is telling us that not only is this line canceled today but all "ace" train s
