down below us is the old union pacific grade which would have been abandoned less than a year after the completion of the transcontinental railroad when they sold the rights to the central pacific railroad company. the central pacific had worked through utah a lot longer they had a much higher quality grade . when they bought the rights from union pacific, they switched to their grade and that is where we are standing on the original transpacific grade. we are coming up to the last track that was made by the union pacific in their approach to summit valley right here. in just a minute we will be able to look down and you can see in order to get through different elevation changes, they would cut through the rock. and blast with black powder making these channels that they could build the railroad through. these hills that you see on the far side of this cut is from the 1860s. this is rock that was stacked up. you can see they even put some bigger rocks to act as a wall, a retaining wall to keep it from collapsing into the cut. pretty neat that you can see work that has lasted almost 160

now, the irish workers on the union pacific, they weren't paid, and they actually -- the ceremony was supposed to be may 8th, and durant from the union pacific was stopped by a barricade on the tracks, and they held him hostage until they got their money, and they did get their money. it was for good reason that they were afraid they wouldn't get paid. now, many of the workers were released, but many of the chinese went back to rebuilding the shoddy, you know, construction. but when they began, they needed workers, and there was a shortage, a scarcity in california. so they put out this flier in january 1865 for 5,000 workers. and crocker, i think, testified that there were no more than 800 that ever showed up. they simply did not want to work. it's difficult work, and the pay was very low. they could get jobs in the mines, other places, and get better pay and a better life. so those white workers, mainly irish, were not interested. then they said, well, let's hire chinese, okay? crocker got the idea and said, well, they built a great wall, didn't they? they could do this. strowbridge
