good evening to you, let's get right to union square. it's happened again, betty. unbelievable. >> that's right, can. this neiman marcus hit is just the latest in a string of brazen, high value grab and run theft right here in union square. take a look at this cell phone video. it shows 10 suspects bolting out of neiman marcus. this happened around 6:00 p.m. yesterday. they can out of the store with armfuls of designer bags before jumping into waiting cars. we also have photos of the aftermath inside the store. it appears a boutique inside neiman's was pretty much wiped out. this is, as you said, a trend. today, san francisco supervisor ahsha safai said the board sent district attorney chesa boudin a letter of inquiry, asking him what coordinated strategy he may have to stop these kinds of thefts. >> this is not crimes of opportunity. we are not asking him to target someone that's down and out. where asking to target people that are recruited by these organized crime outlets, so we're going to see what happens in the rese is. >> a statement from the da's office say

as you well know, we're in union square union square. there's a mix of retail here. everything from high end stores like neiman marcus and macy's to a walgreens around the corner, all of them potential victims of retail theft. by now, the videos are well known thieves bursting out of stores carrying armfuls of stolen merchandise. now governor newsom has signed assembly bill 3 31 into law aimed at cracking down on brazen retail thefts. you're seeing them all across the state of california. those organized efforts and they are organized disproportionately efforts and we want to go after those rings, the governor says the new legislation helps law enforcement throughout the state maintain various task forces targeting thieves through 2020. six since 2019 when the retail task force was established, the chp has made more than 250 arrests and recovered more than $16 million in stolen merchandise. the chp saying organized groups often use the money from retail thefts to fund other criminal endeavors. some of the other crimes that those monies are used for our vehicle. death
