an attempted smash and grab at union, one of union square's most exclusive stores. a car rammed into the louis vuitton store, but sfpd officers were right there. nbc's sergio quintana has the details. by midday, most of the damage to the front door of the louis vuitton store at union square had been cleaned up. in fact, a repair crew was putting the finishing touches on a brand new door. but this is what it looked like early this morning. a silver sedan still parked on the sidewalk with its nose inside the front door of the high end shop. san francisco police chief bill scott says a patrol sergeant in union square actually saw the burglars attempting to smash through the door. one of our sergeants observed a car slow down at 100 block of geary, basically, and then accelerate right into the front of the louis vuitton store. the chief says the sergeant then saw a group of other cars show up, he believes, to help in the burglary. the sergeant says he called for backup, turned on his police lights and watched the cars and suspects scatter without any merchandise. this k

if union square is doing well, the rest of our city is doing well. it's unfortunate that we have to go to those extremes in san francisco to be able to shop, but the impact on the crime is, is, is, is destroying the downtown of san francisco. so just two weeks ago, california attorney general rob bonta sent a bulletin to all law enforcement, including here in the bay area, reminding them of ten new retail crime laws aimed at cracking down on smash and grab robberies, making it easier to charge repeat shoplifters and punishing people who are reselling those stolen goods. the issue here is that nine of the ten do not go into effect until january, which is, of course, after the holiday rush. what is happening before the holiday season is election day, and california voters have a chance to decide proposition 36. this is a measure on your ballot that would allow some felony charges for thefts under $950. this could also increase sentences for some theft and drug crimes. now, opponents say this will divert funding away from treatment and toward prisons. s

this is right at union square around 430 this morning. police say the would be thieves crashed a silver sedan right through the front door, but ultimately left fled empty handed. the police chief says a patrol sergeant stationed right there at union square saw it all happen. one of our sergeants observed a car slow down at 100 block of geary, basically, and then accelerate right into the front of the louis vuitton store. the sergeant says he also spotted other cars rolling in, presumably to help that burglar, but they scattered as he turned on his lights and sirens and called for backup. investigators say this kind of smash and dash is common. about three weeks ago, a team of people crashed into the front door of a store into the dior store in union square. several local cigarette shops across the bay area have also been targeted in recent months. and speaking of crime here, san francisco is showing off a new high tech program that includes drones as the first responders to a crime. and tonight, san jose's mayor says san jose may be follo
