i grew up in this city, and we always knew this as a union town , i still remember when i was in high school and the first nonunion restaurant moved into san francisco, and so we have a constant battle to keep our city union, have union jobs, good paying jobs, prevailing wages, all of that, and we see in hilary ronen and advocate for the work we need to do on behalf of the workers of san francisco. i urge you to vote for hilary ronen. thank you. the confederate forces did run the union army out of town. that is when quantrill and his men came back to the jail because they were holding confederate soldiers here. they broke all of their buddies, so to speak, out of jail. so he was here twice. a couple years later, 1864, the second battle of independence. that is when the union army retook independence and chased the confederates out of town. the jail was used as a jail from 1859 to 1933. when it closed in 1933, it was opened as a soup kitchen, laundromat, jack of all trades because it was the great depression so people can come here for a job. after that, it was leased to the american legion. they left the building follow -- building follow -- fall into disrepair. the city actually condemned the building and that is when the historical society stepped in in 1958 and we took ownership of the building on the condition we had to reopen it as a museum. on june 28, 1959, we reopened this building as the 1859 jail and museum. in 2019, we will be celebrating our 60th anniversary. >> our citie
