one of the unique experiences that i bring is having several aspects of the coin, having been first a citizen, went through san francisco public unified school district, graduated from the high school and was a victim of a shooting very young in my life. at the time i was a victim of a shooting, i was also held suspect while i was seeking to try to get protection and percent from the police department. however, that started -- i started a cycle myself of addiction and violence, which went on for two decades and a and a half. and i used programs here facilities here, the san francisco sheriff's department, went through programs there. also became a certified domestic violence facilitator, and worked for 10 years as a service provider inside. so having those two aspects, both as offender and someone who is a survivor, and someone who has also worked in programs, developing programs, to help with the violence and drug issues in san francisco. so since then, i've worked with various organizations in the tenderloin community. i've developed a program in glide memorial, a pilot called "men

you are a unique case. you are one of the earliest counterfeit victims i've met and you are a survivor. tell us how that happened. >> so my name is rick roberts, i teach at the university of san francisco, which coincidentally is where i think the story begins. as an undergrad i moved there in the very early '80's and we didn't know at the time, but then in 1984 hiv was discovered and by then many of us had been infected infected. so in 1988 i became very ill and was diagnosed with aids. there are very few treatment options at the time, so the '80'sand '90's were pretty rough times. a lot of ups and downs, and i hit a down in 2000, i was diagnosed with related condition and it required that i inject human growth hormone every day. i had a 12-month approval. about halfway through that i went to my farm, pharmacy that i had been going to, the drug comes as a powder and a sterile water and you mix the two and you inject it. i had been doing that for months, but all of a sudden i noticed that it started stingin
