they left sfo 15 minutes ago on two chartered united airlines. firefighters honored the team with giant plumes of water as they taxied out heading east to detroit. fans were here at at&t park as they boarded the buses for the airport. the giants sending 600 to 700 people to game three. not just tim lincecum and the rest of the players and coaches, but much of the front office and players' spouses and children which doesn't happen during the regular season. the team feels it is important to share with families and also they have the emotional support they need to play considering so much is on the line. the players were reserved this morning as they were when they headed off to houston in the 2010 world series. coaches and management spoke with us, including brian sabian. he tells us he is not happy the guys have today off considering they have been playing so well the past few days. the key is stay focused and eye on the ball. >> keep your emotions in check and you have to play clean baseball. that's why we won these two games and starting pitche

but united airlines, one of the nation's biggest carriers, decides it is going to strip it out. certainly it has the pilots in a rage. our jane wells is at lax airport with more on that. it is very curious, jane. what's going on? >> reporter: well, simon, first explain what it is. the secondary cockpit barrier is a folding metal gate which drapes across the aisle to prevent or at least slow a rush on the cockpit if the pilot steps out to use the restroom. it is standard issue on the new boeing 787 but united had the grate removed which has angered the pilots. the gates aren't mandatory under federal rules but why go to the cost of removing a pre-installed piece of safety equipment. it is a weight issue? i'm told it only weighs 10 pounds. pilots like john russell who is also a union rep thinks the newly merged airline wants to standardize the fleet to continental's standards. >> united airplanes are all equipped with this, or just about all the airplanes. none of continental's airplanes are equipped with it. what they would rather do is take all safety features off the united air

this is the line at the united airlines counter at sfo set up for people who had their flights cancelled. not fun. some people waited in line more than four hours, they told us. many say they never got notice their flights were cancelled and couldn't get through to the airline on the phone. that added up to a frustrating day for thousands of travelers. >> in boston, we were hearing about the hurricane on thursday night, friday morning. there's no reason why a million dollar, pullty million dollar corporation that runs planes couldn't anticipated this and akilometer datd passengers days ago. >> a local rescue team will take off to the east coast tomorrow to take the lead in rescue operations related to hurricane sandy. the 129th rescue wing will be sending c-130 aircrafts with two specialized air rescue team and helicopter as well. they will most likely focus their efforts in north carolina. >> once the hurricane begins to settle in to the east coast, we will send forces where need be. so the helicopters can go to one location, the guardian angel para rescue forces, the swift water rescue

as i sat waiting to get an answer from united airlines for an hour and a half unsuccessfully, i sat on competitors and prices to denver doubled and tripled. some flights were removed. others, there wasn't an increase in the price at all. are your partners or are you physically intervening saying we have a special situation here. we reduce supply or double the price. what guess oes on behind the sc? >> the price is usually determined by the airline partners. the airlines drive the pricing. a lot of airlines have revenue management programs. they are looking at supply and demand and pricing on a live basis based on whatever their optimizing for. you might see some airline prices going up significantly. you might see some prices staying the same depending on revenue management program of a particular airline. >> help us understand how this impacts your business specifically. at the end of the quarter will this be a help to your quarter or will this be a ding to your results? >> i think it will hurt the results. right now what we're worried about is making sure that our customers are okay.

united states right now. >> talk to me a little about that, particularly in regard to american right now. >> well, up until recently, american was the last airlinewas not outsourcing maintenance. but now of course, it's in bankruptcy reorganization, it's probably going to be acquired by us airways, it has new management and just even as we speak, just a few hours ago, 450 more mechanics were laid off at their facility in tulsa. that's the last facility in america. >> why is that a problem? all sorts of businesses outsource things. why can't you just find a good company, it's okay? >> well, it's the people that are doing the work. basically, in many cases the airplanes are going outside the united states to developing countries, we were just talking about china, singapore, el salvador, mexico. in many cases, believe it or not, the mechanics are not licensed and believe it or not, the faa allows that. in many cases, the standards are different. here in the united states, if you're an airline mechanic working for an airline in house, you have to go through drug screening, alcohol screening, i went through it when i worked in the airline industry. y
