you say this is united airlines. what are the safety events?they are talking about one low on fuel and one nearly hitting ground. a plane does a fly around. it says something is wrong. it's normally not such a big deal. if you wait too long before initiating such a thing which seems to be what happened here then you're talking about a much more serious measure. why is that? this plane is coming in hundreds of thousands of pounds at hundreds of mile answer hour. suddenly they have to change the physics and go a different direction. what does that mean? that means in the cockpit a series of precise things must be done very quickly. they have to go to full power. they have to reset the flaps. they have to retract the landing gear. they have to stabilize their climb and inform the control tower. in a big jet sochlme of this may be automated. a crew still has to be in charge and a lot of stuff has to happen in a short period of time. the closer you are to the ground the less time you have. >> say the pilots don't perform the pull up at the right mom

united. it was a software glitch and they will not be honoring those tickets. i reached out to the airline today and got in part, this response. united is voiding the bookings of several thousand individuals who are attempting to take advantage of an error of a third party software provider made when it applied an incorrect currency exchange rate. despite united having properly filed its fares. in other words, the conversion was such a mess flyers including those here in the u.s. were tipped off via travel websites and blogs that if they marked their home country on the website as denmark, they could get those cheap tickets. now, here's where it gets really interesting. the department of transportation has a rule that an airline can't increase the price after a ticket has been purchased. so it is reviewing the matter and technically could try to force united to honor those tickets although that may be unlikely. either way stay tuned. we'll let you know what we hear on this one. alison? >> very interesting. ok. one more airline related note here. the former executive sentenced for forcing a

that's what some are asking after a warning from united airlines to its pilots. cnbc's phil lebeau has more. how worried should we be? >> reporter: i don't think we should be freaking out over this, but it is certainly one of the stories that has you saying, oh, what happens when the pilots are up there in the cockpit and the door is closed? all of this stems from a memo that was cement out last month from united executives to all pilots. it's not unusual for an airline to send out memos reminding pilots of safety procedures, but it was the tone of the memo that caught everyone's attention alerting of significant safety concerns regarding poor safety events and near-misses, a direct quote from the memo that was dated on january 9th of last month. what nay are talking about are four events that they do not go into detail about, but those were four events in recent months including one that required the pilot to have an emergency pull up to avoid crashing. these cockpit errors stem from the basic issues of how a pilot conducts themselves and are they following proc
