at that time the landing, lowest allowable landing ratio in the united states air force was 40 to 1.every foot you went down, you went forward 40 feet. the landings at the airport were 10 to 1. they came down like this, and they hit so hard that it would rip up the metal, rip up the ground. and as they landed behind them would rush german work crews, mostly women, mostly wearing the only clothes they had, sometimes bathing suits, sometimes evening gowns, who almost with their bare hands, -- the russians had taken all the construction equipment -- would fill in the stones and rubble really, bricks and dirt before the next plane popped out of the sky 90 seconds later. and then they would run off the field, and that plane would land, and they'd run back on and repair. not only did they do that, but there were not enough landing strips, obviously, in berlin so that they built a new airport which is now the main airport in the city but then was just a drill field in the french zone. 17,000 people, almost all of them women, built with their bare hands, again, an airstrip there in 60 days.

i chose the university of kansas to study engineering, and i enlisted in the united states air force. after a year, i started testing for flight school to become a pilot. it was then i learned that i was slightly color blind, which at the time meant that i could not be an astronaut. i was devastated then, but i know now that life had just given me a gift or what i would like to call a gem. a gem is a learning that enables us to re-evaluate what we are doing of course, unless we do with something with it, a gem is just a rough stone. it's up to us to shape and polish it. only then will a gem have real value. we may have to do things differently or move in an entirely new direction. but for those of us who continue to follow our passions, a my professor and thesis adviser was doing research work for the boeing company. he asked me to help him in his work and he introduced knme to some of the neat people at bowing. i got a job as an airplane design engineer and i loved it. in fact i did so well that they moved me into management. they gave me one employee to manage. and my first employee

obviously as a component of the united states army and the united states air force, go think a littleonal guard with some things. one of the things that i wanted to talk about was in the army national guard, we have what we call recruit sustainment program so as soon as they enter the army national guard, we have them in this program before they get to go to basic training where we are having those conversations -- before they go to basic training where we are having those conversations. these are young men and women right off the streets, right out of high school. they may not have gotten the resiliency skills through parenting at home. we're having those conversations one-on-one with them. and the same for our airmen through our student flight. same concept. as soon as they enter the air national guard, we have them in a student flight and we're teaching them various things that one of them is how to be a resilient airmen. in both army and air, we're doing those things, we're having those very serious and harsh conversations, because quite frankly, they've probably not had those at

i could go through a litany of things that the united states air force does and the program piece of what you want to hear. what you want to hear is what is going on in the field. that is the perspective be offered the most. what is going on in the field? yes, certainly, our suicide program we have come comprehensive air men fitness, the culture of taking care of yourself and others is relevant out there today. what is happening in the field is -- are things like this. things like what i would frame as the art of communication, communicating with people, not so much digitally, because people do that. that is our culture today. or so, this and allow communication. that is a piece, if we focus on how we do that, and how we can indicate that each other, it certainly will resonate with our airmen and resume but the topic of talking about. another area of focus i believe that comes up quite often is this idea of there is a lot of help out there. we know that. our airmen know that, their families know that, but quite frankly, a lot of times they do not take -- they did not -- they take for
