virginia, good with rifles, mechanically -- mechanical equipment and fast cars enlisted in the united states air force as an airplane mechanic. his first step toward becoming the single-greatest pilot that has ever lived. as a mechanic he started out. a new flying sergeant's program eventually gave him his first chance to fly. up until that time, it was officers only. but his first couple of training flights didn't go so well. some people might not know this. he had to overcome air sickness. can you believe chuck yeager getting air sick? but before long he found a new home in the sky, in the cockpit of an airplane. mr. president, during warld warg world war ii, chuck shot down 13 enemy aircraft, five in one mission. he was shot down over german-occupied france in 1944 but escaped capture fly another day. but first he had to argue his case against being sent home under a no-more combat rule. the rule was basically when you were shot down, they couldn't let you go back in if case you were captured. he pushed his way up the whole chain of command all the way to the supreme allied commander, general divid

united states army. it means that the army will have to cut training leaving most of the nonemployed below acceptable readiness standards. the same is true for air force combat units. the navy and marine corps. will have to slash readiness. as you know the navy recently elected to reduce a number of carriers deploy to the gulf in order to avoid the risk of being short that it cannot deploy any carriers during the future period. the perspective of the cuts lead the chairman, the vice chairman, and all of the joint chiefs to recently sign a 28-star letter stating, and i quote, the readiness of our armed forces at the tipping point. we are on a bring of creating a hallow force. the department leaders are working every day to avoid the worse effect of the situation. and we will continue to do so. but the solution to this self-made crisis can't be found in this building. this solution is congress passing a balanced deficit reduction package and appropriations bills -- [inaudible] and detrigger sequestration. our department's leaders have responsibility to continue to make that case to congressional leadership and to the american people. >>> now a house hea

naval vessels since world war i and the smallest number of aircraft in the history of the united states air force. but national security is not the only sequestration risk. in my home district in north alabama, president obama has ordered that roughly 14,000 highly skilled and irreplaceable department of defense civilian employees suffer 20% fer lows and 20% salary cuts. red stone arsenal's engineers, scientists and other civilian defense staff are critical to national security in a time of international instability. their knowledge and skillsets are unique, virtually irreplaceable and maybe lost to national security forever if these workers are forced to find work elsewhere. the damage i've just described to north alabama's economy is before president obama starts hammering defense and nasa contractors and many other tennessee valley federal employees who provide worthwhile services to their country. nationwide, the economic impact is absolutely staggering. sequestration risks 1.2 million to two million job losses with the resulting 1% worsening of the nation's unemployment rate. it's unwise to
