an isis mistake apparently turned into a game for the united states air force. airmen in florida were combing through social media posts by the insurgent group when they discovered a picture of an isis fighter standing at his command post. they found comments in an open forum bragging about command and control capabilities. the commander of air combat command said the airmen were able to pinpoint the location of the headquarters and destroy it less than a day later. the u.s. air force has taken the lead in the fight against the islamic state conducting air strikes over iraq and syria for nearly a year. the department of defense reports u.s. and coalition forces launched 17 air strikes against isis targets in syria and iraq wednesday into thursday. i'm joined now by general mark welsh, the chief of staff of the u.s. air force, also a military adviser to the secretary of defense national security council and the president of the united states. general, thanks very much for joining us. >> thanks wolf. >> what can you tell us about using social media to find a poten

fundamentally the united states is equipping, training providing intelligence and air power to the iraqi forces that have to take to i.s.i.l. daesh whatever we want to call it. now, instead of doing it from four bases in iraq we'll do it from five, maybe six or seven. the strategy is the same the united states support, but the iraqis have to take the fight. >> a few more bases, under 500 troops there as advisors is that symbolic. is that tangibly going to help the iraqis? >> i think the base at takata tq a base that american forces have been at, will do a couple of things. first of all, as i understand it this is where the new operation center moved to. we'll have americans coordinating senior strategy for the anbar campaign. second, tq is in the middle of a different tribal area in anbar. the downside of tribes is they are tribal they occupy certain pieces of terrain, by putting the base and putting iraqi forces on it, it allows a different group to be engaged. finally it gives a safe locks location for the iraqis to work -- safe location for the iraqis to work on. they know if there are ameri

end of the day i've been to iraq and afghanistan as a reservist and a united states senator over 30 times. i've been in the air force for 33 years. i would put my credentials up against anyone in terms of understanding the region, the players. i know almost everybody over there and most importantly they know me. so i've learned the hard way. i've spent a lot of time on the ground. i've made my fair shares-of-mistakes. disbranded the iraqi army after the invasion of iraq in 2003 in hind sight was a mistake. when bush got it wrong, senator mccain and myself spoke up. at the end of the day, i think i understand the dynamic that we face and i'm best prepared to be commander-in-chief on day one with all due respect to my other colleagues including hillary clinton. >> ifill: but how would you persuade the american people it's the right thing to do after fighting two wars, iraq, afghanistan, after the fact that defense secretary ashton carter has said the iraqi troops themselves have not been willing to fight neighboring countries are not sending troops in there. >> i think the american people pretty well understand that r
