i'll conclude here with a picture of menard's arrival in the united states house of representatives in 1869. it was an international media of an african-american arriving on the floor of the house. this was taken out of frank leslie's newspaper. weekly harper also covered it and london "times" covered it. his international stock contributed to the media event around this. the last and final remarkable thing about menard's life is, when he arrived in congress, in 1869, he was only 30 years old. he accomplished this entire career of being a leader within the united states abolition movement, one of the instigato s instigators, a captive and victim of the morant bay rebellion, and the first african-american elected to congress by the age of 30. with that, i'll turn it over to matthew who will speak about his congressional career. familiar name for those who know a bit about history of african-american representation in the united states house of representatives. his main claim to fame is that he was the first african-american elected to the house of representatives. but he was denied his seat in 1869. we'll get into a bit of the reasons behind that. but i'm here to talk about some of his life, his background, his history up until this point, because he was actually a very accomplished individual, who sat at the crossroads of two major events in american history, and international history. they were related events, the american civil war had a front-row seat to this right here in washington, d.c. but also, shortly after the war, he migrated to jamaica, and was a participant in a major event internationally in 1865. both of these events had the connection of being tied to the end of slavery, and establishment of greater freedom, civil rights for the african population, both in the british empire and the united states. so he had a front-row seat to two intersecting events at a very tumultuous time in history. we don't know to

right now, in the united states house of roan sentives, democratic women make up 32% of the democratic caucus. part of what's happened is they tend to be a bit more moderate and have a very tough time making it through primaries. and i think for me, watching, a real training day has hatched this year. a moderate republican woman, one of the few voices that was really capable of of working across party lines and trying to seek some places of compromise. we would all agree that we soarly need. there are an array of women, more democrats than republicans. so that's up to you to take a look and see which other women. but they are out there and find the women that you can support and that you believe them if you're not going to run yourself. >> one more question? >> oh, would you like to go? >> i'm sorry. >> oh, okay. two thievings. one, i just want to encourage the younger women in this audience to reach out to older women to get them social media culturally limit. there is a divide in age of the social media which, you know, older women are -- if you just sit with them. goat them online.
