for myself i served as an officer in the united states navy for many years across three decades. i can tell you the navy i serve in is not the navy michael aaron rockland served in when he was on duty in japan but some things are familiar. when i was a young junior officer of once had to deal with a young sailor who jumped overboard in an attempt to end his own life. i remember talking to him afterwards and he kept saying all he wanted to do was go away and join the circus and i remember at the time thinking it helped me understand that some people are just not cut out for military service. lastly my only son, eric, is currently serving on active duty in the u.s. navy assigned to an aircraft carrier based out of japan. eric is a combat veteran of the war in afghanistan and he has had many experiences around the world but i can also tell you that the navy he is serving in today doesn't look like anything like the navy i served in. one of the important take aways for me from this book is that it was a stark reminder that we as americans need to do more for all those who serve in the

the united states navy headed to the java sea joined the search for flight 8501 that has just resumed as day breaks in asia. at this hour cnn has learn the guided missile destroyer, the uss samson is on the way part of an international force that includes some 15 planes and 30 ships. it will be if first of air, sea and underwater assets coming from the u.s. so far still no sign of the missing plane. four areas were add after the search sunday and monday turned up nothing. cloudy skies and large waves have hampered the search so far. the plane was an air us about a-320. it was en route from surabaya to singapore when it disappeared early sunday morning in the skies over the java sea with 162 passengers and crews on board. the floor is flat muddy and degeneresly no more than 150 feet long. tonight we'll tell what you we know about it. and examine the questions investigators are trying to answer. one, how dangerous was the weather the flight flew into? can the a-320, a plane that millions of americans fly every year safely navigate such storms? and crucially now, how hard it will be to f

our number two member of the united states navy, second vice chief of naval operations is a woman. i'm very proud of that. and they command squardrons and they command ships and so i think the argument is over to be honest with you. i think it's done. and it should be done. i meep, but there was a time in our history where women had a different role in our society and now thank god they have, as far as i can tell, an equal role in our society so they should have the equal opportunity to serve. >> turning to vietnam where you flew combat missions over north vietnam until you were shot down in october 1967, captured by the north vietnamese and held as a prisoner of war until 1973. i know many persons and i have spoken with them, who say if someone else was the author of "13 soldiers" you would be the serviceman selected to be profiled as a the soldier representing vietnam. for your book you chose the pilot known as wild weasels leo thorsness. a recipient of the medal of honor. at times you shared a big cell with him and dozens of other p.o.w.'s. give us a perspective the valor which

the united states navy has three or four debris recovering ships that are routinely used to recover helicopters and aircraft that go into the water. i don't know in a the indonesians have requested that from the u.s. navy, but there will be adequate assets. there may be a traffic problem as these vessels converge on the scene. they'll probably use helicopters to spot the individual pieces of floating debris, et cetera, but like you say high winds and waivers make that difficult. >> there seems to be a new narrative emerging, that is that there might be a sliding scale when it comes to safety of airlines across the world. is that the case, and if so, from a passenger standpoint, should we know that and should there be some type of grading system to let passengers know which airlines are safer than others? >> the problem is that these accidents are so infrequent, that the statistics, it's very difficult to do much interpretation when you have so few accidents. there's been a lot of high visibility accidents, not a lot but several high visibility accidents this year. we're talking about 3 billion
