and my response was, wouldn't that also hurt the united states navy? aid i guess you are right, i can't help china without hurting the united states navy. >> how come that conversation wasn't recorded? >> well, a lot of different reasons. the first reason was we were doing it in the santa ana prison. and when we went over there, we never expected him to talk. it was not ncis policy to record all of our operations. and it wasn't our method of operation. when chi mak said he passed information to china. part of me was delighted, this was a breakthrough, this is with a we had been working at for a long period of time, and now he was telling me the truth. part of me was angry, pissed because he was putting sailors into a really vulnerable position. only to satisfy his own ego. only to get the gratification to talk to people about the work he had done. he had no regard for the safety and security. >> once we made the arrest of chi mak and his family, then it was a waiting period. it wasn't until a year the and a half later that we went to trial. and we were

he enlisted in the united states navy in 1943 at the age of 17. after boot camp, he was selected to attend the navy's radio material school. after graduation in 1944 as a radio technician first class, he was shipped overseas to the islands just east of new guinea and north of the bismarck islands. he was assigned to the navy ship repair unit located on the island of lasniegro. he was involved in the preparation of the ships that participated in the invasion and retaking of the philippines islands and later years he held the position of head of the computer development unit with the head of ships. when he retired in 1991, every combat ship in the united states navy had one or more computers with mr. hoskins was involved with. ladies and gentlemen, mr. paul hoskins. mr. solduk. he enlisted in the navy at 17 in 1942. after boot camp completed his gunnery training aboard the u.s.s. navy work and assigned to combat duty aboard the destroyer escort u.s.s. carter as the ship's gunner mate and responsible for maintaining all his ships, small arms as well

it was brought here on 7 december 1955 by the navy club of the united states of america. you can see in the inencryption above, in recognition of the divine guidance and to the eternal memory of those who gave their last full measure of devotion to their country. this monument is dedicated humbly to the sacrifice in defending our freedom. if you look at the artistic impression there, you'll see the ship held by columbia in the background, a battleship and a palm and the many faces of those that died that day. this rock is very special. you would not find it here on ford island. it was brought here. this hawaiian rock which is flat by some of the hawaiian priests that have visited here said this is a very special rock. whoever picked it made sure that it had all the relevance that -- to the hawaiian culture, springing sacredness and remembrance. here we find this rock, unlike any on the island, brought here to remember the first december 7th monument. we're going to move ourselves over to the "uss arizona" memorial that was dedicated in 1962 and tell that story and take a

the president-elect weighed in, tweeting, quote, china steals united states navy research drone, and takes it to china in an unprecedented act. cnn's matt rivers is following the story for us from beijing. matt, what can you tell us about the response so far from the chinese? >> reporter: the chinese have come out and said yes, that they did in fact take this drone. but when they took it out of the water, they didn't know it belonged to the u.s. navy. and they didn't realize what they had until it was on board. and that's when they made the decision to go through what they would call the proper military channels to return it. this all happened on thursday, about 50 miles off the coast of the philippines, where the u.s. unarmed research vessel belonging to the navy was conducting what the navy was was legal military research off the coast of the philippines. it was being trailed by a chinese navy ship. when it went to go get its two unmanned drones back aboard, the chinese navy ship launched a smaller boat which went and stole that one drone that it then took back boaaboard. that obvi

he said on twitter today: "china steals united states navy research drone in international waters, rips it out of water and takes it to china." later, china said it will return the drone its navy seized 50 miles northwest of the philippines' subic bay, where the u.s. once had a military base. the pentagon says the return results from "direct engagemen"" with beijing. the u.s. says the drone was conducting research into the salinity, temperature and clarity of the sea. china opposes the surveys. it's been building runways and installing military equipment on islands there. filipino president rodrigo duterte is threatening to terminate an agreement that allows u.s. troops to conduct military exercises in the philippines. this was in response to the deferral of an american aid pact due to concerns over duterte's extrajudicial killings of several thousand drug suspects. duterte also told reporters today his country did not need the aid and that china might provide it instead. >> we can survive without american money, but, you know, america, you might also be put to notice. prepare to leave

he sent out this tweet writing, quote, china's steals united states navy research drone in international waters rips it out of water and takes it to china in unprecedented act. i want to bring in matt river whose is following the story from beijing. matt, what's the latest that we're hearing? >> reporter: well, the ministry of defense as you mentioned finally came out late saturday evening here local time with this statement saying that it confirmed that it did take this drone and that it took the drone out of the water because as they put it, they wanted to prevent the device from harming navigational and personnel safety of passing ships. once they realized what they had taken out of the water they then said we have something that belongs to the united states and now we're going to contact them which they say they have and they're planning on returning it. it's inappropriate for a resolution the u.s. has unilaterally hyped the issue. it happened on thursday when this u.s. bowditch was conducting research with these two drones. when they went to pick them out of the water a chinese nava

the fact is this move made by the chinese navy makes the relationship between china and the united states that much more tense. an unarmed military research ship was 15 miles off the filipino coast where the navy says it was conducting research using two underwater drones called ocean gliders. the research was legal under international law. it was set to bring them back on board when officials say a chinese naval ship launched a small boat which swooped in and stole one of the ocean gliders. the defense department asked for it back but the chinese ship sailed away. friday pentagon officials asked again. captain jeff davis told us it is ours and would like it back. china's ministry of foreign affairs says china and the united states are using military channels to appropriately handle the issue. a state run newspaper, the global times, citing a chinese military source said the naval ship took it to prevent any navigational safety issues. the source told them, quote, the issue will be smoothly resolved. the seizure comes at the time of heightened u.s. military tensions in the south china sea

navy research drone that they said was basically adrift, and they claimed they were picking it up for safety, to get it out of the way. the united states was already working on getting it back with some levels of cooperation from china when donald trump tweeted china steals united states navy research drone in international waters, riches it out of the water, takes it to china, an unprecedented act. of course a lot of people know that the first time he wrote that tweet he misspelled unprecedented and had to reissue it. then as china becomes more cooperative, the same person who tweeted that when china says they're prepared to give back the drone and they want to give it back, donald trump tweets, we should tell china that we don't want the drone they stole back. let them keep it. now i can't think of a more unhinged set of statements by someone days away from the presidency. >> i was completely flummoxed when i saw that tweet this weekend. it is sometimes hard to figure out what trump is trying to say. i mean, there was a kind of schoolyard taunt to it, you know, you want to give me back my baseball bat, i don't want did anymore. and h

"xi jinping prepare for rocky relations with the u.s. that trump's real thinking is very difficult toll fathom." and accused of adding fuel to the fire and concluding he seemed emotionally upset but no one knows what he wanted to say. trump is not behaving as a president. former governor of the state of washington, gary locke, joins me now. there are a lot of people who feel that the u.s. has been getting played and rolled by china, that china has done all kinds of things in terms of its economic relations, that it has stolen intellectual property and finally someone is going to get tough and crack down on the chinese. what is your response to that? >> first of all, lots of cases have been filed against china and the wto and we have won those and forced china to change their trade polic
