right now, let's bring in leo gerard president of the united steelworkers international. mr.ave you with us. this is a fevered pitch effort by the white house and the president. what do you think of it, going to nike? >> look i think it's a terrible mistake as you do and i do. we support the president on almost everything else. this is a terrible mistake. nike represents everything that's wrong with global trade. in fact, nike has publicly said that they're forthis this deal because they'll be able to export from vietnam with duty-free. 1% 1% of nike's employees are in america. and we now know that nike at one point in time had moved from china and other countries to vietnam, because vietnam had lower wages. i think this is an act of desperation. i think whoever advised the president to go there, we ought to thank that person because i think it's a terrible place and it epitomizes everything that is wrong with the trade deal. >> the only thing that would make this good is if nike has got some announcement they're going to make tomorrow that they're going to start building fac

steel, timkin steel new port steel, united steelworkers and others a classic example of working together to protect workers. i hope it will pass as part of the customs bill and i hope it is made part of the whatever legislation goes to the house and goes to the president for signature and that may be the legislation that includes trade promotion authority. i'm also in favor of a bill that is the american enforcement act in the customs legislation. i supported and cosponsored this bill with senator wyden since it was introduced in 2011. i've been proud to be the lead republican on this legislation because just as i talked about how that bipartisan bill with senator brown on the material injuries standard is so important, we've got to be sure that once you win a trade case, that countries don't use diversion to be able to go around whatever provisions are put in place. let me give you an example. sometimes you win a case against one country but then they evade those higher tariffs by moving the production to another country. and they do it precisely because the trade case has been won. it'

the steelworkers union here in the united states, one of the largest unions in the afl-cio, here, stunned the world of american labor two years ago when they issued a press release announcing the formal alliance-- i'll use their words--the formal alliance between the steelworkers union of the united states, which--i don't know how many members it has, but in the hundreds of thousands, big union--with mondragon, the corporate--that huge, successful worker's self-directed enterprise in spain. and i remember many of us were taken aback. "what an interesting idea. an alliance." what did it mean? well, the details were hard to come by. it seems as though there was discussion, obviously, between them. they issued a joint press release and had a press conference. but it's hard to tell, so i'm now going to imagine where this might go. i'm not saying that's where they're taking it. i don't know exactly where they're going to take it, or even whether they're going to take it somewhere, but here's what i would do. imagine a trade union movement with a completely different strategic idea from what it
