a good report for united technologies. we are economically sensitive stocks, freeport, it hasn't been great in copper all year, but freeport had a decent report coming off the lows of a few weeks ago. dupont, also sort of good enough, not great report overall. you see them all to the upside. we may even be in for more good news in the third quarter, because so far, let's take a, the companies are not dropping the stills for the third quarter. s&p 500 in the third quarter, up 5.6%. that's the earnings estimate so far. on july 1st, it was up 6%. it's a small decline considering it drops more than that. my point, ceos are promising that things will be better in the second half of the year. dupont came out and said that today. united technologies, illinois tool works, that's a major reason the market's holding up so well. another major reason is there's a lot of money on the sidelines. take a look at what happened to bond outflows in june. $60 billion in outflows in bonds, and only $7 billion in inflows into stocks. where's al

we have components out, travelers and united technologies.looks like that company came in with better than expected numbers for $2 per share. the street had been expecting. i believe the revenue is a little lighter than the street had anticipated. this is continuing something that we've seen over several quarters at this point. they did have lower catastrophic losses. the number of events i believe there were a greater number of events. they cost the company less in each of these situations. they also have been in a situation where they have higher underlying underwriting margins. gives you a much higher margin. maybe that's why you look at the revenue not being what the street had expected. again, that's a dow component it is indicated higher by 2.7%. those favorable trends for this company have been continuing for some time. >> do you remember buffet after the katrina year of hurricanes? he made money the next three or four years. >> you don't write silly insurance things that wash it all out. >> regardless of what al gore or people say, yo

so united technologies led the dow and it put up spectacular numbers. why? because it makes aircraft components and aerospace is in total bull market mode. there simply aren't enough parts out there to meet the demand from the big aerospace companies, so united technologies is able to raise prices on its products and have bigger margins because the raw costs for its materials are going in the right direction. talk about a virtuous circle. but what wasn't working today in the dow? what was the worst? travelers. the fabulous insurance company. this one's a textbook case of the perils of competition. the stock was soaring all morning after that great number was reported until our own mary thompson broke in on "squawk on the street" and said hold it, travelers needs to compete on price to get business, particularly car insurance. >> the house of pain. >> talk about what i don't want to hear. competition is the bane of profits. i like bountiful oligopolies like the airlines, the rental car companies, and of course the rails! >> all aboard. >> i like beautiful duo
