aerospace and defense contract tomorrow united technologies released a statement that says it expects to furlough around 2,000 workers on monday, october 7th. they are located in connecticut, florida and alabama at the aircraft division that makes the well-known black hawk helicopter. it's the state's single largest employer. if the shutdown continues into next month it could furlough a total of 5,000 employees affecting all parts of the company. the issue has to do with a lack of inspectors from the contract management agency or dcma. they are deemed non-essential federal employees but without them, united technologies can't manufacture aircraft. and they aren't the only company affected by or voicing concerns over the government shutdown. earlier today the president said the shutdown is leading to further uncertainty with business leaders tied to d.c. >> companies worry businesses will be disrupted because in an area like maryland, virginia where there are a lot of federal workers, you don't know how that will impact the economy. >> reporter: boeing said a lack of u.s. aviation offi

take a look at united technologies.as a penny, top line was light, they raised the low end of their earnings per share but lowered their revenue guidance. they talked about weakness in the military, aerospace market here. but there's a lot of strength in commercial aerospace, lockheed martin had great numbers. they did narrow their revenue guidance. raising or affirming that 2013 eps guidance and doing nothing on revenue is the big trend right now. they didn't change their revenue guidance at all. still the stock is up. there's a couple of exception out there to this trend but not many of them. tjx, retailers are struggling to meet their numbers. not tjx. they raised their outlook, boosted their comparable sales. they're just firing on all cylinders right now. and they said they'd achieved 10% to 13% earnings growth in the next several years. it just doesn't get any better than that across many different reasons. travelers, their numbers were tremendous this they beat on earnings by almost 10%. that is very hard for an

you've got united technologies, lockheed martin, the biggest ones out there.they report before tomorrow's opening bell. and then you've got boeing, general dynamics, they report before wednesday's opening bell and ratheon before thursday's opening bell. analysts will look at how well each of these companies have managed around lingering spending cuts and the threat of more to come in the future. they will also be listening closely for how each chief executive officer forecasts results and how many times, if any, they mention the spending cuts or all of the dysfunction in washington. a special attention, tyler, will be paid to just how these companies plan on growing profits. will it be more selling to international clients? if you're a trader, these defense names could be named because of those earnings catalyst. but for the prevailing sense is at least these guys have been on a great run. maybe it can continue. it will all depend on how all of their outlooks pan out. >> and none of these surprises me more in a way than boeing, up 56% year to date. given all o
