navy -- the royal navy had an awful lot of experience in fleet fighting, but the united states navy d not. the hard work we have put into this stuff in the years between the spanish-american war and the worst world war were what resulted in our battleships' ability to go over and integrate almost flawlessly with the royal maybe -- the years between the spanish-american war and the first world war. americans were not as good at were, and the british that was a lesson we took to .eart in the interwar era i tell my students that probably the most important thing the united states did in the first world war was brought to million members of the american expeditionary force to france and took them all home again and did not lose a single one of them. the u.s. navy's primary responsibility was to face the port of american troops. there were no losses on eastbound convoys. we lost three empty troop transports going back the other way. they were not regarded as heavily going back the other way. once the war ended, they had to bring everybody home. it was a massive undertaking and one that th

states navy, he founded the united states navy library. ands basically books tactical manuals from all around the world. he wanted the officers to read these books and learn from the best around the world. tingyevacuated -- evacuated the navy yard library, and here is question for you -- i will be asking a lot of questions as well. be prepared. library is older? the library of congress or the library of the navy? the navy library. they did not evacuate the library of congress when it was burned by the british. we have that over the library of congress. he actually -- the book ramp that is there, he makes his way down the boat ramp. there is a rowboat with some of the yard workers waiting for him after they took a torch to the yard and make their way down to the anacostia to alexandria, and a hideout out a few days there until the british leave the city. he did not torch all of the buildings, though. this includes the commandant's house and the other houses that you see across the way over there. those houses were untouched. i

that's a view that's not well-known, even in the united states navy. the last couple of years has the navy decided that -- and determined officially that it is the greatest naval battle ever fought by the united states navy. and as such, is celebrated at all ships and stations in the navy marine corps. as regards the public, it's particularly unknown. if you doubt me, pick up your son's history book and see if it rates more than one paragraph in 2,000 pages of american history. so i'm not going to correct that, i'm not going to rectify that difficulty. but the american veterans center here has taken a big step forward by doing their part to see that every american child knows and understands the significance of the battle of midway. let me begin with my beginning. i was ordered after graduation from the naval academy to pearl harbor to join the carrier "yorktown." i got there in late may, and went aboard the ship the night before she deployed for the battle. now, "yorktown" had just come back from the battle of the coral sea, where it had been heavily d

conventional they endure a number of setbacks including the georgia campaign which again will be ultimately phasing out those units. on the navy side the frog men are created mainly to clear obstacles for amphibious landings after the debacle where marine landing craft ran into obstacles and had their bottom store now. these units would go in and send demolitions to break away the charges and were generally considered successful in doing so. then we also have in world war ii the oss has its own special operations forces and william j. donovan the head of the oss. he is trying to find places to put forces. a lot of the regional commanders don't want is people they are but he does find willing partners in the theater partly because the error not a lot of american forces there so he organizes what is called detachment 101 and it was given that number because they didn't want the enemy to know that they only had one unit. they partner with the coach and forces after some trial and error. a lot of their initial attempts don't go well and there aren't local partners they can work with. in detachment 101 does find it consistent leade

well, the united states navy did not know that. at sunrise they renewed bombardment. now they are exploding projectiles in the fourth among the union soldiers who rushed to the top of the fort, down to the river front where we are now and they are waiting their hands and waving their hats and blowing their bugles to signal the navy that the army has captured the fort. well, for admiral porter that is not good enough. he has a marine contention wrote him to shore -- row him to shore. the plants his flag in the fort and declares the u.s. navy has captured fort anderson. it's the only incident in the civil war for the united states fortcaptured a confederate from united states army. on february 22, 1865. just two days after fort anderson was evacuated. wilmington fell in and robert e. lee surrendered his forces. he was forced to abandon petersburg in early april and retreated westward. he was forced to surrender by u.s. grant on april 9. that was only about six weeks after the fall wilmington. most historians focus their or inion on virginia terms of the seaport in charle

one of my -- my uncles -- i never met him -- is my mom's youngest brother, served in the united states navy. he was on a ship called the u.s.s.swaney. they were on duty in the western pacific in 1944. their group of ships came under attack by japanese kamikaze pilots and dived their aircraft into several ships, including the ship that my uncle bob was stationed. he was 19 years old. i think on his ship they were trying to launch aircraft to go up and take on the kamikaze pilots and several of the kamikaze aircraft apparently crashed into the aircraft carrier in which my uncle bob was doing duty up on the deck of the aircraft carrier. his body, along with the bodies of a number of people that were on the deck, were never recovered. they were killed, missing in action for an extended period of time, but the bodies were never recovered. and my grandmother -- i told folks in delaware during ar memorial day -- during a memorial day observance -- in delaware we have places of honor where our gold star families sit, and i told the gold star families that a ceremony near the delaware memorial bridg
