these were pledges and united way is working to followup with these to make sure they're jobs. dcf is working to analyze all the different sector opportunities available for the young people. there were well over 3,000 of those and we want to increase that from last year. and then -- >> i'm sorry mr. commissioner mendosa. >> sorry. >> i apologize. >> and we also received $356,000 in pledges at the event. that money is used to help support of the operations but also to help subsidized internships for a number of students and young people in the private sector. on may 11th we had a success youth resource fair. thank you commissioner for attending. we went through interview preparation and screening and received workshops on resumes and dress for success and the job search and enroll online on our online system this year. at the event we had a number of volunteers and employers and community based organizations that came out to provide information to young people and over 700 young people are screened for job readiness at the event. so one thing that's new about this year's system

art [speaker not understood] on behalf of united way of the bay area. we like to acknowledge our strong commitment to [speaker not understood] and poverty reduction. we worked with star bucks as a strong community partner to prepare young people from under served communities for jobs. when united way placed a call for companies to support the mayor's summer jobs program, star bucks was an early and eager taker pledging 25 jobs and exceeding their goal with more than 40 placements. more specifically about these jobs, from the beginning star bucks pays its employees a living wage above minimum wage. employees receive tips from training and more importantly excellent package of benefits including health care and tuition for reimbursement for all employees who work more than 20 hours. as a result, fortune magazine has consistently ranked star bucks as one of the 100 best places to work for more than a decade. these include precisely jobs of the type so critically needed in san francisco. entry level positions for individuals with or without high school dipl

eric mcdonald chief operating officer for united way of the bay area. we are thrilled to be partnering again with mayor lee, city departments, and our private sector leaders to provide jobs and internships this summer. last summer mayor lee raised his hand, let the nation, i should say, raising his hand to say we in san francisco will make a commitment to investing in the lives of our young people in creating jobs and internships that, one, will hopefully inspire them to sofa focused on their educational pursuits and two have them see the vision and the opportunities that are in public sector and public sector jobs. last summer we celebrated over 5200 jobs and internships. 39% of which became permanent jobs. we have a longer term vision that is not simply a summer job program, but a year round program. and ultimately we want to see a pipeline that is connected to our k-12 program, our crick will you have as well as our academies that leads thened to the city college connection of vocational training that leads to our four-year institutions so we have a

so, maybe we'll get down to that 5% pretty soon with the help of united way. and it's going to be a shared responsibility of departments, but we're going to push really hard on private sector because they're the ones that are experiencing the most success in our city right now. so, we're going to ask them to help pick up this great opportunity to work with our kids. i can't think of anything better than to have our youth experience the summer jobs because it pays for year after year after year if you get an individual to be focused on their careers. and that's going to help all of us focus on a better city. there's a lot of issues that we have documented here. we'll make sure they're incorporated into the priorities that we have. we've heard from seniors, we've heard from ihh -- from your work force, from the experience that you've had. we heard from youth. we've heard from people that need our help and all the gaps that we have and we'll definitely pay attention to that. so, again, thank you for giving up your saturday to join us. i look forward to seeing som

or an employer, at the bottom there is a match bridge.org and/summer and the program of the you united way of the bay area and a key partner in this project. all right. so, just a couple of other items of note. this year unlike last year, we have worked on the community based organizations that can help, go into the community and recruit but also do some prescreening and want to make sure that the youth that are placed through this program are screened and are work ready and that is part of the role that we are asking of the community organizations those in the process have been contracted with right now who should very soon be public with those organization names. this is the bottom and inperson readiness screening. we really want to tighten the program and make sure that there is some screening that the folks or the youth that are referred truly are work ready so that the employers have a good experience. >> and employer engagement. the mayor, has stepped up just last week has the mayers and employer challenge, over at city hall and it was an event where the employers were asked to come

it has been a huge success with all of our departments and working closely with the district and united way. on the porter challenge, this year, the april 30, there was a job pledge of $138, that was the two departments that wanted to do a shout out for the jobs they he were going to create and that was rdpa. but the mayor did a department head meeting with all of the departments and did a similar presentation to the department heads to let them know the success of last year and did a call to action to make an effort whether you're doing one internship or 200 like our other two departments so we expect all our department heads to make an effort to coordinate either funding or opening position for our youth within their department. so that's one of the key pieces and i wanted to say that this year's youth resource fair was remarkable. last year was really fun, but this year was even more fun and we had a lot of volunteers and it was extremely well organized and many of the employers came out including low's and starbucks and the 49ers and i think american eagle and so kids got -- were being

we have been working with united way worldwide and they have sent pleas to all united ways across the nation and that is another piece of it. of coming through and helping us. speaking of moore moore has such strong community leadership. there is no doubt they will rebuild. they're resilient and they've been through this before. >> john: one last question for you, marci. there in moore on the ground, are you seeing a lot of civilians assisting in the salvage and everyone is and rescue efforts or is it mainly law enforcement or does fema come in? >> reporter: fema was here doing search and rescue, as far as the cleanup, it has been all residents. first of all, you see the residents coming back to their own individual homes seeing what they can salvage but there are people who came just to offer their help and those didn't show up with gloves and ready to dig in, we've seen people come down the street with bottled water with gatorade. they know people have been out here all day sifting through the debris and that they're probably thirsty. just the little acts of kindness really making a

we are a founding member of the united way bay area road map to cut poverty committee. last year we were supporter of the mayor's summer jobs youth program. this year we are as well and recommit today adding 50 more partners in 2013. april 27th this year we worked with the san francisco giants and dpw to have a san francisco clean sweep. we have 1400 partners, families, customers and businesses and working together contributing 500 hours to clean up the city in nine different areas. our partners participate in monthly dpw events. star bucks also supports charitable nonprofit organizations to cash and in kind donation. some examples are united way of bay area, bay area scores, community growth, friends of san francisco public library, san francisco aids walk, and the lgbt community center and glide. that's a small slice of what we do in local community and regionally wise, too. now to talk about our projected site at 2201 market street. currently this is what the location looks like right now. the building requires fundamental improvements. accessibility upgrades, struct
