the university is there.t the tender age of 7, which is supposedly the age of reason, and an age to tender to make like shaping decisions, had to choose between a cardinal and cub fan. all of my friends became cardinal fans. they became cheerful. i became conservative. i chose the wrong team. and then you feel the sense of loyalty. football combines the two worst features of american life. committee meetings and a huddle. football is a spectacle. it is a big spectacle. baseball is a habit. i was on a major league committee called baseball and the 21st-century. we did research. we came up with a conclusion about 90% of self identified nfl fans have never been to an nfl game. television makes nfl fans, going to the ballpark makes baseball fans. >> is it still a way? >> i think it is. the important things were jackie robinson, free agency, and camden yards being built. we had all those hideous multipurpose stadiums that were good for neither respond or football. a guy would come to the plate. he could not tell i

it is good for the university. oure greatly extended financial aid programs the last decade, so we increased our spending on financial aid by 90% since 2010. we have a program that permits families making less than $65,000 a year to come with no parental contribution at all. we are working very hard to make harvard affordable. in fact, it is the cause of education that have gone down at harvard. 60% of our undergraduate students are on financial aid. if you're on financial aid you pay about $12,000 a year for your harvard education. i think that is important. making higher education affordable is a much broader challenge than that. we have been very lucky to benefit from the kinds of resources that are alumni and friends have given us over the years to support the financial aid commitments. that is the case everywhere. let me say something about another aspect of affordability. if you look at what states have extended for students on higher education, and the public higher education in the united states, that is go

and a public university. so let me now get to our findings in the book. and in this presentation i'll focus on one of issues that i raised earlier about the presumed homogeneity of conservative college students across the country. and i'll do this in particular by drilling down on students' political styles on these two case study campuses. and when i talk about styles, i'm not talking just about students andal lumbars' stated ideological beliefs or the doctrines that they adhere to, but also their expressive practices in the service of those beliefs. and i do this because in our increasingly polarized national political environment and even within the republican party itself, we're seeing that the styles of politics is becoming, are becoming as important as the ideas of politics. insofar as particular styles can lead to animosity, gridlock, a lack of compromise. and i'll open my discussion of conservative college students' styles with a couple of vignettes from our data. so it is 2007, and is members of the

and the university of texas and the long horns. there's not a problem with the analogy. and that problem is that college sports exists in a cacoon. they have tack privileges they have subsidies from the university. they have state subsidies. if you take away the branding of college sports. and they lose those, there's a question about how the finances hold up, and also a question about how fans respond. maybe all of a sudden ifs then't branded as amateur athletics maybe they treat them like they do minor league baseball. and instead of 60,000 people showing up, you get ten or 15,000 showing up, and is the enterprise itself is transformed. >> barrett, the enterprise itself is transformed. hasn't the money in some ways become the tail that wags the dog? >> absolutely. obviously with the sec network, the money being generate bid the attention that college athletics in particular college football and basketball create, is huge. the landscape now is completely different than it was 15 years ago. ten years from now, it is going to look entirely different probably with even mor

i am a university in san francisco and i'm proud of that. thanks. >> thank you. next speaker, please. >>> good afternoon, almost evening to the commissioners and to the madam chairperson. my name is dr. mary wardell, and i want to share briefly a little bit about usf's character and achievement as a national leader in diversity engagement as well as local community outreach. you heard earlier from vice-chairman smith about some of usf's community service accolades. actually last year in 2013, over 7,000 usf students performed more than 300,000 hours of community service. and you may know that usf is among a handful of universities nationally that requires all undergraduates to complete a service learning course in order to graduate. you may know he that usf sponsors more than 25 sustained community projects throughout san francisco and the bay area and we offer more than 100 service learning courses in which our students and faculty are doing service learning projects with the community. but what you may not know is that in 2013 diverse issue in higher education,

now, the university accepted that it was a mistake. they accepted that they really had some culpability here. so, what did they do? they offered to plant six fast growing tree. i'll tell you those six fast growing trees have grown very fast. they're 20 feet tall now and don't block what they were supposed to block 13 years ago. i'll be dead before they become the screen they're supposed to be. the issue is how can we prevent this from happening again? it happened, it was a mistake, they accepted it. how can we stop it? my point is that saying that the general landscape plan is the way of dealing with it isn't enough. it's too general. it needs to include a mitigation that says a certain area where these trees are located will be avoided at all costs. it needs to include the fact those trees will be platted and marked on the site and given to the planner ahead of the design process so he he can avoid them. that was not done the first time around and i don't think it's too much to ask that we go to that next level in terms of making sure

i think every student athlete who plays for a university hud be able to go to the university, assumingthat they can do the work, they should be able to be educated, graduate school. >> i think that's really important. people talk about helping them graduate from college. yes, they should do that. but mba, masters, ph.d., having some ability for the rest of your life to go back and get education, that's something worth considering. some folks are talking about the medical expenses long term. i think that's a fair question on the table. but this chance to continue your education not just for a couple years while you're competing but for much longer beyond that. >> what about the stipend issue? look, you put this to a vote as i understand it, and the schools didn't agree. some of the smaller schools rather vetoed the idea of a nominal stipend to help family members get to games, to help some of these athletes with their basics. >> all of these issues we're discussing right now are not only good topics to discuss but fair and appropriate things to do that are being aggressively debated rig

looked at over 2,000 people whou graduated from the university of chicago, very elite university with theiriv mba's from 1990 to. 2006. and what they found was i tn the beginning of these graduates' careers, their wages were very close. there was only a minimalat difference. where you saw that wage gap w widen up was over time. women were far more likely to take time out of the work force to have career pauses and to work shorter hours. i found this extraordinary. during that time, only 10% of male university of chicago mba's took six months or more out of o the work force. when it came to women, 40% of women took six months or more off. that has big ramifications when it comes to salary.ff >> men are four times as likelyg to ask for a raise than women. >> they are. men are eight times more likely to negotiate their salary than 8 women. if you negotiate your salary,
