i went to ucla because i have heard the difference between university of california and the university of pennsylvania was the that the university of california was three. we found that was true. i got a ph.d. for nothing before reagan. but, what i found also was that the campus around the university of california in los angeles, there was a lot of covert discrimination and i took on the naacp coast they weren't doing anything about it and organized them to go down and start picketing those places, which would not lead us work, would not let us live in apartments, would not -- we were just discriminated against all over the place. we could not get haircuts in the neighborhood for example. at about that time, the -- occurred and we started dick airlines at the walworth stores in west would the ucla campus and we want to do more. we just realized that even though we were doing the best we could to show that we were in solidarity with the students who were trying to break down segregation and -- in the south, they have a much harder time. then came the freedom riders for the freedom rider

and this book derived from a course that i thought originally at the university of california university of california, and then at florida atlantic university on violence. the class began as a class dealing with violence in american history, so it don't with war, it dealt with racial strife, it dealt with labor unrest and familiar topics. and it seemed as if every time i taught this course, which wound up being about every other year for the past 12 years now, something horrible happened in the news. some sort of school shooting, some sort of mass shooting. and so, we wound up talking more and more in this history class about current events. we were trying to place these events in some sort of context. we were trying to make sense of what was happening, and when i taught the class in 1997, they were school shootings and west paducah, kentucky. when i taught it in 1999, the shootings at columbine high school in littleton colorado happened. two years later in 2000 on thursday shooting in california. 2003 in cold springs, minnesota. again, 2005 read lake minnesota. i was teaching this cour

university of san francisco. i've always talked to my sons. one son's a fourth year medical student at university of california, spent his time today talking about this, as well as my other son who lives with us and is right now overseas on a federally sponsored graduate fellowship from morocco. we've lived in san francisco since 1978. we've lived in two-unit buildings, we lived for 10 years in the western division in a highrise. i know the city well. we loved our place in the western edition. it was a 60-unit complex, i was on the board. we moved, i brought my father out, a disabled veteran, not enough room there. that time, our sons were born here, we had a choice of moving. we looked outside the city. we were thinking of moving up to marin county to have more space and we discovered cal hollow. we bought our home there because it gave us the choice, that's what the beauty of cal hollow is, we have a choice in the city of different neighborhoods. for a time period, that was western edition highrise was perfect for us but then with a family you have another choice and what's the beauty of san francisco is we have a real neighborhood, a real nei
