princeton university working on my dissertation which would eventually become my first book torchbearers of democracy and i was going on one of my first research trips to the of massachusetts amherst where w. e. b. du boise papers were housed and very responsible. through the finding aid i sold reference to world war i materials and i had no idea what it was. i go to the library, to the special collections department and ask the librarian i would like to see these materials. i think it might be a folder, maybe a box ifuc i'm lucky. the library returns with six microfilms. so now i'm really intrigued what could this possibly be. some of you may remember what a micro machine role looks like. i put the first in and there is a manuscript by w. e. b. du boise on the experience in world war i that i knew nothing about. the manuscript as i would continue to learn more about 800 pages long. in addition to the actual manuscript, all of the research materials and the correspondence related to this project. he gave his book and incredibly evocative title. the black man and thewo wounded world.m so just imagine here i am a young bride i a graduate student stumbling upon the unpublishe
