of nevada politics. he's kind of a powerhouse of nevada politics. so paul axel had made the decision that he wanted to give his personal political papers to the university of nevada reno some of the first shipments of his papers started coming in 1983. and that includes scrapbooks that includes memorandum correspondence briefing books reports. anything that you would have in a political office you name it's going to be in those papers. so we're in the reading room now, but we're going to go into the work room, which is where all of the processing happens for the archives here at the university. so come on through. and actually interestingly enough while we come through the door. you can see right here. this is this is a portion of some of paul axle's materials. this is a micro film which is a lot of the constituency correspondence. and the stuff that came into the office they microfilmed everything. so these are all of the cartridges this is millions and millions of pages of correspondence here. so we have this out right now. and you can just see the breadth and depth of some of this. this is also we have the paper versions as well of this so this is be

while we're joined now by jeffrey l cummings, a professor of brain science at the university of nevada, las vegas and also i'm a researcher and leader of clinical trials. professor cummings, welcome to d w. i want to start by asking you how big of a breakthrough is this new drug? but thank you, having for having me on the program and let me just say this is big, big, big. we have been waiting since 2003, both in the u. s. and in europe for a new drug, for all timers disease, this is a breakthrough. it's also a breakthrough because as you mentioned in the opening, this is a disease that actually targets the underlying disease process itself. right, well how is it that it took nearly 20 years for us to get to this point? i think there are 3 reasons, really one we haven't really understood the biology very well so we needed to understand it better. we needed that and and we needed the biomarkers to show us that the drugs were working near such an important died to do in clinical trials. as always, those 3 things i think that's added up to make adequate amount of success. all right, we sli

nevada, the whole spectrum. it is not one size fits all as an answer. and working with our universities and other collaborators they're really putting together a package of what the questions are. relative to the innovation that you mentioned, you mentioned mast amber. here's a little known fact that don't think anybody -- or many people realize. the forest service has incredible work in innovation and we actually have patents. we have increase the ability of patents and these are paths for the public. just in the last three years we have 24 patents just from our direct forest service scientists and we work through cooperative research development agreements with private industry. and those have led to at least 150 patents. there's just a couple of examples there. super strong carbon foam, mobile bio which our production unit and, non formaldehyde adhesives for some of these mass timber and plywood products. these are just examples. but in the general technical reports that we issue, our consumable -- they are consumable for the regular practitioners, but if there is more that we can do, we'd be glad to work with this committee. >> just one point before
