i'm a senior at the university of pittsburgh and serve as president of the student coalition. i'm also involved with hillel and jewish student life and i'm a jewish day school graduate. like many of us, i come from a large american jewish immigrant family with relatives who perished in the holocaust and others who were able to flee the nazis to south america and eventually the united states. as a descendant of holocaust survivors, finding anti-semitism is personal to me. it's also personal to me as a college student who has witnessed and experienced anti-semitism myself. on a friday evening in august, i was walking to shabbat dinner at hillel with a group of friends who were physically assaulted for being visibly jewish. it is personal for me because like many i lost friends on october 7 and i have a friend still being hostage and i am determined to honor them. that's why after i witnessed my college friends being attacked for being who they are, i decided to wear a kippah, because i wanted to show the world who i am, that i'm jewish, i'm unafraid, and i will not be silenced.
