so i took this wonderful memoir writing class from nestor who teaches at the university of washingtonand also hugo house and i had a community of writers in that class and i learned from my teacher and, yes, you can learn to write all on your own, you don't really need a teacher but a teacher really helps and accelerates the process. i'm not young anymore and i don't have that much time. i have a lot of books i want to write and i want to get them out before i die. so, you know, i have to accelerate my -- my craft skill. you know, at one point i thought, oh, yeah, i can just write because i'm naturally talent. i remember i wrote a novel and i showed it to a good friend of mine who was a professional writer, this was 2014 and i was hoping she would say this is so brilliant, it needs to be published, right? but what she said -- what she said is, well, and i thought, oh, she hates it and then she said, well, it's not bad for a first draft and this was actually -- i've been working on it for year and written 8 or 10.
