on the question of profiling, one of the principles that the presidential polling directive has made explicit and made universal is that the united states shall not collect signals intelligence for disadvantaging persons based on their race, gender, sexual rientation, or religion. i think that, along with many of the other things here, i go to the point that we have here, the president speaking out on these issues. when the study disclosures comes up, the president said he wanted to have a national and global conversation about national security. it is a conversation he wanted to be engaged in as reflected in the choice of a review board, people that are very trusted by the president. he has not endorsed all those programs, but he has certainly taken that on board as a vigorous conversation, and i think that can be a tipping point to move forward in some very substantive ways on the broad set of issues we have here. >> i think one of the contributions the president has made here today is this image of he out-of-control or rogue national security agency. i think that's an important step. the two things i'm looki

if we look at it, here, julian, we just looked at the university of texas did a poll about abortion supportg in texas. and found that only 16% of those polls say that they think that abortion should never be available. now, you don't end up a majority anywhere, but 49% saying it should be generally or always legal. and another third saying, in the cases of rape, incest, life of the mother. so a vast majority when you add those two latter categories. but you have a state legislature that's governing that's trending much more towards that 16% than towards that 69%. >> yeah, what they're doing, it's the politics of restriction. so first we move the debate away from washington to the states, as we said. this is where the action now is. and then within the states, i think the strategy for many republicans has been to fight for different kinds of restrictions, gradually curtailing access. so that you get around that poll problem. so that you get around the grayness in the polls, but gradually limit the number of abortions that are available. one-party rule is not all it's made out to be, and ther

it is interesting about the federal government, some people at the university of cornell did a poll about three years or four years ago, he asked people whether or not they benefited from any federal government program and 96% of the people said they did not benefit from any single government program. then they went back and asked them a series of detailed question -- questions about federal programs and it turned out that 54% had benefited from two or more programs. a lot of people are benefiting, david may actually be one of them. a lot of people are benefiting and do not even know it. the famous comment during the debate over obamacare where the guy got up at a congressional town meeting and said -- i do not care what you do about health care in this legislation, but keep the government hands off my medicare. he did not even realize that it was a government program. there is a lot of misinformation out there. if david went back to school -- i do not know his circumstances, but if he wanted to go back to school because he was thrown out pentagon that is a government program. doing all k

the minimum wage, addressing income inequality, universal prekindergarten, extending jobless benefits, and of course, health care. >> right. >> and pollsre on board with the president's solutions. 73% say we should raise the minimum wage. 63% want to extend jobless benefits for the unemployed. 54% want to extend taxes on the corporations. most of americans, if not in some case, overwhelmingly most of the americans agree with the president. >> they absolutely do. and that was why he was reelected in 2012. the ideas that he is talking about are the things he has been very consistent in talking about for quite some time. i think that's part of why you're also going to hear the president talk about how he may have to do some of these things on his own, because congress has been so unwilling to work with him, despite those poll numbers that you just cited. >> you know, ryan, louis gohmert tried to clarify his comments blaming single moms for poverty. and the more he wiggled, the deeper he got because he ended up doing it by equating it, the safety net, to slavery. why this. >> we need to encourage and incentive advise young women not declar

recent polls show 91% consider job creation a priority. 63% say universal pre-k is a priority. 59% want to close corporate tax loopholes. and 54% say we should fix and keep the health care law. people are ready to move forward. >> they absolutely are. and i would say to you, reverend sharpton, for this state of the union we did an extensive amount of outreach around the country, talking to americans from all over, talking to the business community, small entrepreneurs who are just starting companies to major players. and we said what can we do to grow the economy? what is the message you would like to hear from the president? and i think the message that he will deliver this evening will reverberate and will be well received by americans all over the country. it is an optimistic message. it is a message about action. it's a message about opportunity. you know, if you work hard and you play by the rules in this country, you should succeed you. should think that your children are going to have a better chance than you have had. and all it's going to really take is for us all work together
