that's like an unobvious question in moral philosophy, i think. on the one hand, assuming these people were not like sadists, but were kind of random cannily selected people, let us say -- randomly selected people, let us say, they might have values acquired from the rest of our values except that they wouldn't care about us from -- they might not care about us in the same way that we care about each of our own lives -- [inaudible] but they might care in similar ways to the rest of us about abstract goods like beauty and happiness and avoidance of suffering. there might be a slightly narrower conception of values, it was just the value of a few people. personally, up close i think it would be much more desirable if there were a place both for these abstract values, but also for everybody who is alive today on the planet. it would not -- [inaudible] matter optimized for feeling pleasure or matter optimized for scientific discovery or what other ab advantage -- [inaudible] there's room enough to sort of allow all reasonable values. so that would be,
