one thing, one criteria that we have in choosing local heroes is that they be unsung. when i looked at m.j.'s resume and looked under awards and titles and it listed runnerup for ms. almadin, it was long due the time for this award. m.j., come up. [laughter] there was a whole bunch of noise up here today and i just wanted to say that another one of the things that i do is i'm the native american co-chair for sciu. and so there was a bunch of people out front fighting for jobs, fighting to help prevent the layoffs that's going on in november. so if you're here, mayor, i heard some cheers up there. i hope that means we don't lose any people from the city jobs. so i want to thank all of you who have worked in this community for the 40 years that i have been here. i moved here in 1969. we have such a strong community. it's so amazing the strengths that we have and there is something about san francisco that's very special. it pulls in people. and one of the things that i'm doing currently is to recognize a protocol t

. >> the volunteers to meet are the unsung heroes in this field that take the animals to hope and nurse them to get strong enough to come down and rehome. without volunteers, i would have to be honest to say this wouldn't be much more than a pound. we thank god that we have the number of committed people coming down and helping us out, it makes all the difference in the world. >> when you want to come in and volunteer, you go through a general orientation, about two hours. there is a lot of flexibility. and the various programs available, are baseline dog walking. you can work with the cats. you can work with tony's kitty rescue, with the small animals and guinea pigs and birds and chickens. >> you always have an appreciative audience. >> do you feel that what you have learned here helped you with your own dogs? >> the training they don't have? yes. and it's things that you learn, we usually outlive our dogs and every time you get a new one, you have skills to teach them. >> one of the programs is training program and it's staffed by a member of the community and one of the programs she

great teachers are the unsung heros in our society. they perform miracles every single day.ow do we get the hardest working, most committed to the children who need the most help? we have to be most creative. let me clear, financial incentives are a piece of that but a small piece. you need a great principal. you know a -- you need a supportive community, all of us have to work together. you have to create the climate and culture where great talent want to serve where most needed. >> you identified a crisis. >> that's what is so complicated. >> a million teachers will be retiring by 2014. how dow you incentivize them? >> this is what's interesting. the gates foundation just did a study of 40,000 teachers and what they said was what is number one for them is to have a supportive real environment in which they can work with each other and have a supportive principal. now, we have to pay teachers competitively. it's tough right now because the economy is so bad but we have to pay them competitively and then we have to do some of these differentiations. as the chancellor said, w

the other great unsung hero of online journalism is a young woman named marcy wheeler whose blog empty wheel is must read every day for national security reporting. she regularly scoops "new york times" on issues regarding torture, civil liberties, the war. the times has been forced to credit her at times because she has beaten them to a story. i think if you look at the role that talking points memo has played in covering politics on a daily basis, there is some things that it does that i don't particularly like but they have changed the game. and when it comes to online journalism by having serious reporters that are doing a combination of old school journalism, muckraking, and blogging. i think it is one of the most exciting parts of being a young journalist right now. and if you are tech savvy, because it is an open frontier. i think the best bloggers are the ones that are most serious about keeping intact what was good about old school journalism. you have to have the facts straight. you have to call people and check things. i think that bloggers are journalists. i don't think the
