[applause] >> i said i was that going to cry, so i won't. i was overwhelmed last year, when i emceed on behalf of tom phillips. he gave me a call and asked him to -- asked me to help again this year. he said, kqed will contact you in one or two days. 10 minutes later, kqed calls, and we are going over some of the things that we are doing today. and her voice said, you know, you were nominated, and you won one of the awards. i said, what? she repeated herself. she did it three times. before it sank in. again, thank you. for this prestigious award recognizing native americans in the community. my friend joe sent me an e-mail. he said, first off, congratulations. t

speaker, there are unsung heroes and heoins among us. -- heroins among us. these are people who overcome challenges just to do the ordinary. they are not born into plenty. they are often born into poverty. but they have lives that are rich in that they overcome great obstacles in life just so that they can be of benefit to the lives of others. one such heroine was born in july of 1944. she passed last week on november 9, 2011. her story is one that i would hope we would remember simply because it exemplifies the life of a person who met challenges, did everything that was required, played by the rules and sometimes these persons go unnoticed. lola may bolden davis, born in texas, anderson, texas, to ollie prat sanders and charlie bolden. she was their second born. she attended allen farm school up to the eighth grade. she joined rock west baptist church. at age 16 she moved to houston, texas, and acquired her first job as a housekeeper. at age 18 she met the love of her life, ruben george davis sr. a year later they had their first child, pamela. she went on

he said his sights on a volunteer ems unit in new jersey to give these unsung an updated -- heroes a to hang their hats. >> this squad is made up entirely of volunteers who donate over 25,000 man hours a year in servicing their community. we heard their lounge was used for everything from training to relaxation and in dire need of a makeover. we got the entire squad gathered inside right now for what they believe is a local news story. for a group that answers almost 1000 emergency calls a year, i think they deserve more than a news story. they need a rescue. a >> this what is 100% volunteer members. we are 100% the least in need. most of our members come from within the town. >> nobody is compensated financially, but the reward and satisfaction out of being a member, out of having another family, out of having a place you can call home is here at station 100 planes broke rescue squad. >> how's it going, everybody? we love coming to the rescue of actual rescuers. people who go out and help other people every day. i concede this lounge is in desperate need of a makeover. some of these
