upmc is making its anti-union message very clear.on messages are being displayed on hospital computer screen savers. steve greenhouse is the labor and workplace correspondent for "the new york times." he has been on the story. he joins us tonight. mr. greenhouse, good to have you with us. >> nice to be here, ed. >> the sciu and workers recently had a protest which the mayor called the largest labor demonstration in pittsburgh in 20 years, going back to the issues with the steel industry. did this get a lot of attention? will it have an impact on the medical center? >> ed, i think it got a lot of attention in pittsburgh. it did not get a lot of attention nationwide. what the they're doing in pittsburgh is kind of novel. it's kind of innovative. they're trying to mount a huge amount of pressure on this huge hospital system with 62,000 employees and 22 hospitals to try to pressure them to raise their wage floor to $15 an hour from $11 an hour. nationwide they're trying to make this whole idea of a $15 an hour minimum acceptable. it's do

at upmc presbyterian, there's one in intensive care there. >> so two now are in intensive care. idea on how serious their condition is at this time? >> i don't have specific details on that. >> when you were treating the six patients you treated, how serious were those injures? what were those injuries like? >> they were all knife wounds obviously. one, the most serious one we received, was actually an arm injury but it appeared to have a vascular injury with significant bleeding, and that was transferred to children's hospital for surgery. the others all had various degrees la s laceration, to the chest, abdomen, extremities, all of which were eventually treated and released. >> these are kids. these are kids from 14 years old to 17 years old. how were they doing? were they talking about what happened? >> surprisingly, they were mostly doing fairly well. they of course were scared and anxious. b but, you know, otherwise were doing very well. >> were their parents on the scene right away, were they at the hospital? >> yes, there were parents. actually, the parents were more upse

students were transported to four hospitals, allegheny general hospital, forbes regional hospital, upmc east and presbyterian hospital. the suspect is in custody being questioned right now by the murraysville police department and the westmoreland county detectives. >> dan, can you tell me where inside the school this incident happened? >> it happened in classrooms and a hallway in the school. school was just actually coming into session. it was quarter after 7:00 in the morning. we have students arriving for school, i believe their sections start at either 7:30 or 7:40. i don't have that information in front of me. >> the suspect that's in custody, is it a student and does this incident involve just one suspect, just one student perhaps? >> yes, it is a student. it involves only one individual. the school has been searched twice for any additional, and some of the students in the area were immediately questioned to see if there was more than one actor involved. currently we're recording only one actor. >> do you know the age of the suspect? >> i don't have that information available at

and a young woman was sent to the children's hospital, and within the upmc system, or presbyterian hospital, i believe a few were also sent there. the more critical patients came here because of our -- we're the nearest trauma facility. but i don't know -- that's what i know. >> and so far, is everyone out of surgery? refresh our memory -- >> no, there's still one young boy still in surgery now. >> and is that the boy who had the serious liver -- >> it is. >> -- involvement? >> it is. >> is this going to be a case -- can that liver be repaired? is this a transplant situation? what do you know? >> i don't know that yet. i don't think it's going to be a transplant situation. i don't know. >> all right. thank you again, reese jackson from forbes, and everything that your trauma teams have been doing in the e.r. molly joins us, a reporter with the "pittsburgh post-gazette" now. molly, are you there at the scene? and what do you know so far about what happened? >> sure. i'm in a parking lot right now near the school. there was just a press conference a short time ago with the public safety spoke

junior and sounds like right now, he is still in surgery here, and we do have confirmation from the upmc officials that there is one person who has been taken here to presby and so we are looking to get information as to what condition he is in, and is he still in surgery, and what the recovery process could be like, but right now, we don't have the answers, but i am certainly digging the trying to find it out for you and as soon as i get updates i will pass it along, but for now, back out to the studio. >> i want to bring in msnbc analyst and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. good morning. >> good morning sglcht the first call came in 7:15, and what we know is that it is a sophomore male, and seems random and went on for quite some time, and the initial report is 30 to 40 minutes, and 20 people stabbed, and what do you make of it? >> well, one things chris, it shows that guns are not the only danger in schools, and the real danger is emotion. and the danger with the students is when their conflict resolution skills have not been developed. this stabbing takes us back to january 2006

. >>> on the phone with me, medical director of upmc trauma surgery. doctor, can you hear me? >> yes, i can. >> my goodness, what a morning. can you just walk me through without obviously violating hippa, how many people have you seen describe the severity of the injuries. >> so at my hospital, we took care of one individual and i do have permission from the family to give you some information. he is is a 17-year-old gentleman who sustained a single stab wound on the left side of his torso. he arrived with very low blood pressure with evidence of massive bleeding in his chest and abdomen. we had him in the operating room to stop the hemorrhage in his chest and abdomen. >> how -- how -- teetering is the word that is coming to mind as far as how close, how touch and go was it at times with him? >> he was very critically injured. he had massive bleeding and it's thanks to the life saving maneuvers that the ems crews provided in bringing him as quick lly as possible to a leve1 trauma center. this wound would have been fatal had he not arrived to a hospital capable of providing thi
