new york city. i don't think they anticipated that. narrator: the majority of new york city's drinking water comes from watersheds in upstate new york. a watershed is the area of land where water from rain or snow melt drains downhill into a body of water. mountains act as a funnel to feed rivers and lakes. and in this case, reservoirs. in the new york city system, water is collected and stored in 19 reservoirs, which can hold more than a year's supply -- over 580 billion gallons of water. almost all of the system is fed by gravity, without the use of energy-consuming pumps. valves open to regulate the flow into the 85-mile-long delaware aqueduct -- the longest tunnel in the world. at hillview reservoir... the water is partitioned into another giant tunnel system. where it travels deep below manhattan. the pressure built up by gravity from the mountains pushes the water upwards toward the surface through vertical shafts. these shafts feed the water mains of each neighborhood, which branch into smaller pipes below the streets... feeding into buildings and houses, into the plumbing, and finally, after its long journey, to our faucets.

the only showers near russ across part of upstate new york and they're not coming southbound any time soon. it has been a relatively quiet season so far but it is not anywhere near the peak of hurricane season. the statistical peak is right around the beginning of september. especially the first two or three weeks of september. we'll to have watch that very, very carefully. in all likelihood it will be tropical storm danielle over the next couple days. high pressure is in charge of our weather. the jet stream deflected up to our north and back out across the middle of the country. the heat is building once again. and a little nudge of that heat is coming our way as we get into tomorrow and wednesday. temperatures now, 97 in st. louis. 101 in wichita. the heat indices, nearing 110 degrees again across much of the mid south and a little taste of that coming our way. tomorrow, the record is 98. and i think we're going to equal that record. maybe even break it tomorrow. and as we get into wednesday, wednesday's record is 101. i don't know that we have the stuff to get all the way to 101 b

louis is one of my favorites as is the glimmer glass opera in upstate new york. i love going to hear those companies because they do such interesting productions. there's great art throughout this country and what i think a lot of arts organizations haven't done well enough is to make their case outside of their home communities so they can start to build support for their organizations outside of their home communities. the kennedy center raises 60 percent of the private contributions outside of the d.c. area. we have built a visibility outside of our home community that allows us to raise funds and therefore to expand our activities in washington and around the country and around the world. there are great arts organizations all over this country. i'm hoping that they can start to build their profiles and that was a very important part of my message because i believe they have a claim on resources in their communities, but also outside of their communities. >> let me ask the question again. i'm talking about your favorite broadway shows. >> my favorite broadway
