i work for a paper in upstate new york. i worked there for several decades covering health and environmental stories as well as sometimes overlapping into agriculture issues. it is largely a rural area so agriculture issues are important. and natural gas development for a long, long time in new york state was not much of a story at all. there has been some conventional development in western parts of the state but it is a very small part of the economy. and people wouldn't get too excited about it. there are newspapers readers unless there was infrastructure or pipelines going through. in 2008, i got some information from sources on the farm bureau that something different was happening and my editor was on me to cover this natural gas story. we thought it was similar to the small natural gas stories we covered in the past until we got information from farmers who had banded together to form a coalition to leverage bargaining po powers with the companies. and a group of farmers leased land out for $110 million. and eg energ
