let's go to the search area in upstate new york first. cnn's alexandra field is on the scene for us. update our viewers on what's going on, alexandra. >> hey, there, wolf. right now we are learning new details about how police managed to close in on escapee richard matt shooting him dead. his co-fugitive, co-escapee david sweat still on the run at this hour. we are learning a malone resident called police this afternoon, picked up the phone, dialed 911, when he noticed a liquor bottle left inside his cabin. he knew he hadn't put it there. when officers arrived, shortly after that they heard shots fired. the 911 caller stayed in his cabin. we know ultimately richard matt was shot dead. wolf it took a lot of different leads to get police to that point. let me take you through the sequence of events here. it starts around 1:30 this afternoon when there are reports of shots fired newer route 30. about a half hour later another report of shots fired. at that time a man driving a camper notices that his camper had a bullet hole in it. he didn't

fox news david lee miller is outside the maximum-security prison, they left behind in upstate new york. conflicting reports, is that right? >> well, we have clarity now, melissa. we spoke to the state police, and they tell us that there is no truth, no truth to reports that these two fugitives have now been cornered in the town of willsboro but continue to follow a lead concerning the men's whereabouts in that town. let me rewind a little bit and tell you what happened here. take a look at map, see the relationship between dannemora where the prison is, about 40 miles from willsboro, willsboro is to the south. short time ago this morning, about 2:00, there was a notification that two men were spotted walking on a road in willsboro. a vehicle approach and the men reportedly fled into the woods.

families across upstate new york have been on edge for weeks and now that fear is gone. they can breathe a sigh of relief. new york state police sergeant jay cook cornered him, shot him and then captured him yesterday after 22 days on the run. this happened outside of the search area in a small town called constable which is a few miles from the canadian border. the trooper was on patrol alone when he spotted sweat and the fugitive started to run. >> at some point running across the field he realized sweat was going to make to a tree line and possibly could have disappeared and fired two shots from his service weapon. >> sweat was hit twice. medics rushed him to the hospital and transferred him it a more secure trauma facility where he is now in critical condition. >>> the security of course being paramount to make sure we had the situation controlled and be able to provide care in a way that's safe for our staff and everyone around us. >> police say they identified sweat's dna on a pepper shaker they believe he may have been using to mask his scent and throw off the sear
