president it seems to me that now is the time for us as a nation for us as elected officials, to have a very, very important conversation about how we balance our need, of which there is no debate, to protect the american people against terrorist attacks while at the same time we respect the privacy rights and the constitutional rights of our people and how we maintain america as a free and open society. i got involved in this issue a number of years ago when i voted against the u.s.a. patriot act and i remember some librarians in the state of vermont came to me and they said, you know, as a result of section 215 of the u.s.a. patriot act, law enforcement officials the f.b.i. can come to a librarian and demand that that librarian provide information about the books that people are borrowing from a library. and, of course, section 215 goes a lot further than that. mr. president, do we want to be a nation in which we are looking over our shoulders and worrying about the books that we are reading because somebody will say, oh, you're reading a book about osama bin laden; clearly you must

as it has in many of our communities. we have allowed our criminal justice system to get out of balance. and these recent tragedies should galvanize to us come together as a nation to find our balance again. we should begin by he'd heeding the pleas of michael brown and trayvon martin in the past years. those who are instigating further violence in baltimore are disrespecting the gray family and the entire community. they are compounding the tragedy of freddie gray's death and setting back the cause of justice. so the violence has to stop. but more broadly let's remember that every one in every community benefits when there is respect for the law and when everyone in every community is respected by the law. beneficial to multinational companies that don't repatriate taxes and other things that help us grow as a nationve to look at the details and both sides have indicated that for different reasons in order to work that out. david: moving on. investor warren buffett says the best way to resolve the minimum wage controversy is by letting taxpayers pick up the tab. writing in the "wall street journal" today, buffett suggested increasing tax credits for those on minimum wage, thus increasing the bill for taxpayers. carrie, what do you make of this idea? >> basically saying what republicans said ad nauseum that minimum wage kills jobs and the earned income tax credit was signed into law by republican gerald ford. earned income tax credit is subsidizing work versus penalizing work. you are encouraging. david: you still put the onus on the taxpayer instead of the businesses, and it smacks to me a little of crony capitalism. capitalists want the taxpayer to pick up bill thats they should be paying? >> not only it doesn't necessarily help the people who are meeting that minimum wage. what buffett failed to
