gorgeous sunset sent in to us by don ford. look at that by mt. diablo. gorgeous sky.ht after 5 :30 the sun went down and don took an amazing picture. for the first time since we were tracking santa we'll be tracking rainfall as well. dry tonight but things will be changing. i find it very interesting how the atmosphere works. the smaim ridge that's blocked any chance of rainfall for the past six weeks will be the same delivery mechanism for the rainfall. high pressure was right over top of us over the past couple days. it's now sliding to the south. you notice the increase in cloud cover today. it continues to slide to the south for the next few days but still strong enough and close enough to keep the rain away. it's raining in far northern california but not here. it's still a blocking ridge. it will go from the a blocking ridge to a steering ridge. now there's a wall in the atmosphere but it's not over us. all of this moisture will now hit the wall, go up over the ridge, but now that means it's passing over the bay area. the same thing blocking the rainfall brings

us to our knees. today a new tower soars above new york city, and america continues to lead throughout the world. after americans were killed at ford hood and the boston marathon it didn't divide us. we came together as one american family. in the face of horrific acts of violence at a sikh temple in milwaukee or a jewish community center outside of kansas city, we reaffirmed our commitment to pluralism and freedom repulsed that anyone should be targeted because of who they are what they look like or how they worship. most recently with the brutal murders at chapel hill of three young muslim-americans, many are afraid. i want to be clear as i can be, as americans all faiths and back grounds, we stand with you in our grief. we offer our love, and we offer our support. my point is this, as americans we're strong and resilient. when tragedy strikes when we take a hit we pull together. we draw on what is best in our character. our optimism, our commitment to each other and our commitment to our values, our respect for one another we stand up, and we reblacks and we recover and we emerge stronger than before. that's who we are. ford is following developments for us in eastern ukraine. he joins us now from donetsk. what have they told you? >> the separatist leader here in donetsk has released a statement that doesn't bode well at all for this cease-fire. excuse me if i paraphrase it. he said, refer together separatests, will stop firing throughout the area excluding the town of debaltseve. he said there were no words about the town of debaltseve, and any attempts by the ukrainian army to escape from the town or break out will be regarded as a violation of minsk. the ukrainians have been pouring in troops to it. we were there yesterday. the separatests have for the last week or so claimed that they have completely surrounded it. we understand that there are as many as 8,000 ukrainian troops inside debaltseve. and it's very obvious by the statement that he considers debaltseve to be part of the territory area. you >> coupled with what you saw today, talk us through that. >> well, we came back from the debaltseve area this morning. as i say, we were reporting from there yesterday. gene we saw a big troops build up there ukrainian forces in that area. we heard that there had been shelling and fighting throughout t

sam ford is live in northwest with a chance to look at things up there and now he'll give us a look at the changes that he's seeing there. hey, sam, tell us about it! >> leon, it was a situation where they want all the reporters up on this scaffolding so we could look around the top of the cathedral, around the ceiling. places they said people had to miss for 75 years. so it was a celebration. celebrating the end of phase one of the cathedral restoration. scaffolding has been up for years as workers have meticulously replaced mortar and glass and stained glass windows during the effort of more than three weeks of work. august 2011 earthquake took its toll on the cathedral causing some $32 million worth of damage. this phase one work which included both interior and exterior work costs $10 million. >> overall, it's been a wonderful experience to try and get up to this ceiling access that is not, as i said been available for over 75 years. in some cases longer. and we've been able to really not only repair the earthquake damage but also create a new sparkle to the interior space. >> agai

at uc berkeley. thank you for joining us professor. is our optimism as far as automotive jobs, warranted? >> absolutely. this is very good news. good news for fordgood news for ford workers. or the entire economy. these are workers who were working at $19 an hour, who all of a sudden will be earning $20 an hour with a much richer benefit package. this is as a result of a highly profitable ford motor company. a competitive company, and workers are sharing in that. matt: is ford the only company with 10.2. general motors is adding shifts as well. autos are expected to rise to $70 million. >> general motors and chrysler are making important history. at gm workers will be receiving a profit-sharing check of as much as $9,000. that is a record. there is a dimension that is important. as we all know gm was plagued with recalls last year. millions of vehicles that cost the company close to $3 billion. it would have been possible for gm to subtract that and lower the profit-sharing checks for workers. instead, mary barra the chair of gm, said the workers did not do this and they will get the full $9,000 later on. it has not been announced. the executive

ford theater in downtown d.c. we first reported this on twitter. news4's mark segraves joins us live with a look at what crews are doing to dry things out right now. mark? >> reporter: good evening wendy. this water pipe burst actually affected several buildings downtown here near 10th and "f" street. most notably the historic fords theater. crews are downstairs in the basement trying to remove the water. and the basement is the home to the theater's museum. the museum is home to irreplaceable artifacts like the gun that fired the fatal shot that killed abraham lincoln as well as clothing worn by john wilkes booth and medical instruments that were used to treat booth. luckily the water didn't get high enough to damage the artifacts but the damage is bad enough to temporarily close the museum. >> the theater remains open, performances go on as scheduled. just the museum is affected. we don't have a projected time with when we'll be able to reopen. >> reporter: the closure comes as a disappointment to the nearly 1,000 visitors a day who come to this museum, and it comes as fords theater is preparing
