for us being latino and participate of an overall broader pool of different cultures from the bay area our environment. so having a different cultural perspective, i think, is key because we are a style of different ingredients and that's an environment we broke up in. you have so many different cultures and you can feed off of that. >> when you're into film haking, your gears have to be moving. not just that you have to be a little -- you have to be active, your mind has to keep going. creativity doesn't just spring up on you. you have to work on it and keep thinking of the next step. so you have to be creative in what you're doing. you have to be constant. >> i have to give props to vince lowell for 48 hours. he started here five years ago. we were in the first one. 48 hours, you make up films and show it, show it on a big screen, you see your work displayed where it needs to be seen. large. and doing that, we were in town and that opened our eyes, wow. there is a community here and it's starting small. and when i was here, when i started, there was one. there was a film commission.

us. it is exciting to see some much of our culture and arts in our businesses and levels of government represented by latinos. thank you, jose cisneros for being here. thank you, a supervisor avalos. we have a lot more work ahead of us and a lot more work to do together. it is not just the increase in population. we have challenges in education, challenges for businesses. we have to do more. one of the best things that has happened in a long time is something that the community and work very closely together on is that the california dream act passed. it was signed by our governor. [applause] that was such a tremendous and courageous act. it is necessarily reflective of what is happening in our own education. i have had that great pleasure of working with the board president and carlos garcia. he is at another conference, the association of latino administrators and superintendents, having a national conference on the very important topic of how we improve education for latino communities across the country. i want to thank him for working so closely with us. luis herera has done so much for the libraries. thank you for such wonderful leadersh

latino film festival and we are starting to provide family matinees at the theater. even though the nonprofit status has helped us, it has not solved all our problems. we feel being able to serve beer at the theater will help bring in some money and new attendants to our theater. is a business model that has proven successful in other cities. we understand the concern about bringing more alcohol to 16th street. crime there is something we deal with on a daily basis. but our demographic as well as the demographic we hope to attract by in the inner ear sales is not interested in abusing alcohol or creating and nuisance. we tried to verse and educated crowd and our patients -- our patrons are supportive of local business. they recognize we do this and we have letters of support from all of our neighbors. besides showing films, we see ourselves as a community center and resources and continually partner with local businesses and nonprofits to bring issues to light. we partner with the habeas project, the aclu, the partnership to end domestic violence, the vietnamese youth center and others. we help them with fund-raisers and just to have a public venue for their issu
