uc berkeley chancellor said all of us in the uc berkeley family are heart broken to know another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence. neighbors describe leslie as a talented kind young man who was excited about his adventure in france. he posted daily comments about his time in nice on social media. he was participating in a summer local entrepreneurship program in nice. three students were injured. one of them 21-year-old darius madora remains hospitalized with a broken leg. the other two students were released from the hospital. it is not clear yet why nicolas leslie was not reported among the dead immediately after the attack. a vigil will be held for leslie tomorrow at uc berkeley at sproul plaza. we will have more on the investigation into the attacks coming up in about 10 minutes. marianne favro, nbc 10 news. >> a chaotic situation in baton rouge after what is describes as an ambush left three officer dead. plenty of questions about what led up to this violence in a community that's been in crisis ever since the controversial shooting of a black man by officer

that african-americans are considerably more likely to be subjected to officer use of force than white americans. u.c. berkeleyrofessor jack glaser is one of the authors of the report. he joins you now. also with us is richmond police lieutenant felix cahn who manages tactics training for the department. welcome. first, you and your co-authors studied thousands of use of force incidents across the nation. what did you find? >> generally speaking, across continuum of use of force from putting hands on all the way up until what's called less lethal force like using a taser, that african-americans were more likely to be subjected to force even when we benchmarked against the rates at which whites and blacks and other groups are arrested. kind of controlling for what you'd expect to see the rate of use of force that there is more force applied to african-americans above and beyond that. we also found for lethal force that there was no racial disparity, but the numbers are very small. and given all the other evidence including data on fatal incidents, we're taking that with a grain of salt. >> so are you then also

statement saying as the secretary has long said, it was a mistake to use her personal e- mail and she would not do it again. >>> u.c. berkeley students gathering to remember one of their own. tarishi jain was completing an internship for bangladesh studies and was among the 21 people killed in the attack on friday. jackie ward is live where the memorial is just now gettings under way. jackie. >> reporter: anne, you can see a lot of people have gathered here a lot of tears, hugging, and a couple00 had rsvped at the facebook event and everyone is hare to remember the 19-year- old. jain was the sophomore who planned to major in economics. at the vigil, we'll hear from those who knew her best, friends, a professor. she was an indian citizen and the student body government organized the vigil today. >> we wanted to put together a space for students to mourn and grieve reflectively and reflect on who tarishi was to them. >> reporter: she was cremated in new dehle. those who knew her say she was a smart and ambitious young woman with a true heart. all are welcome to attend the vigil. >> jackie, we are hearing she had personal ties
