joining us from capitol hill peter king, member of the house homeland subcommittee on counter terrorism. thanks very much for joining us. i know you listened carefully to donald trump's speech yesterday, national security speech. was there anything you particularly liked about that speech? >> several things. one is the fact that he said we should not be telegraphing to the enemy what we are going to do. that has been a mistake i think president obama has made since the start going back to 2009 when he ordered the surge in afghanistan and told how many troops were going and the date they would be pulling out. that is the worst type of signal to give to the enemy. when he decides to go against isis he made a point of saying we wouldn't use ground troops. you don't tell the enemy that. i also agree with donald trump when he said that if you draw a red line you have an obligation to maintain that and live up to it otherwise the enemy is not going to fear you and your allies are not going to trust you. so president made a serious mistake in syria when he did that. things i disagreed with say

nbc's luke rhussert joins me live now from capitol hill with more on this. luke, what more can you tell us? >> so, this is interesting, craig. it's going to be a meeting spearheaded by the representatives who first endorsed donald trump. that's duncan hunter, a military veteran out of california and chris collins out of new york, right outside of the buffalo. they'll lead a meeting of those who already endorsed trump, which is about eight members of the house, one senator from alabama and they expect for members of congress who may have not endorsed trump publicly but are very interesting in his campaign to come to this meeting tomorrow. it will be held off capitol hill. ed brookover of the trump campaign will be there. he is with the carson campaign and moved over to trump. he is someone who specializes in the delegate selection process. we expect a few other trump campaign officials to be there. the idea is to start this goodwill outreach between the trump campaign and capitol hill. the aid i spoke to whose member will be involved in this meeting said they hope to have one of these every

nbc's brian mooar joins us from capitol hill with more on ryan's announcement. brian, last year ryan said he wouldn't accept the nomination to be house speaker. we know he eventually did. so what did he say about that? why should people see today's announcement any differently? >> ryan said that repeatedly, that he didn't want to be the house speaker. but today he said apples and the house wanted him. so really, as far as a lot of people are concerned, he slammed that door shut today. but it's still open a little crack. ryan said he wants rules to be made, when the convention happens in cleveland in july. that will not allow somebody who has not run for the office of president, in this election cycle to get the nomination. but that again would be up to the delegates. this is something that paul ryan says he doesn't want. he wants to campaign on behalf of the party. and on behalf of the eventual nominee. who he says will not be him, count me out. those are the words of paul ryan. >> can you recap for us, where we are with the delegate counts for trump and for sen

luke russert joins us from capitol hill with more on those development and you spoke to paul manafort, did he give insight how did the meetings go? >> reporter: he told me they are very positive and that at the first meeting this sort of the last few weeks there was about eight members of congress who had supported trump that showed up today it was 16. after the big night trump had on tuesday it doubled. a few new endorsements to roll out, bill shuster of pennsylvania, chairman of veterans affair committee jeff miller of florida and mike kelly of pennsylvania now an ardent supporter of donald trump. manafort had an interesting line about the selection of carly fee ov overyor rena, he says it's an act of desperation but then he said it was a very odd move from ted cruz ahead of the indiana primary because carly fiorina at her time at hewlett-packard was the quote/unquote queen of outsourcing. i suspect you'll hear that line through the duration of the time he's there until tuesday. other interesting things talked about in the meeting with members of congress where they were on the dele

she joins us now from capitol hill. senator collins, tell us about your meeting with the judge. >judge. >> it was an excellent meeting. we talked for over an hour about a range of issues that included his judicial philosophy, second amendment cases, the separation of powers, the executive over-reach. we were able to touch on a great many issues. >> ifill: did you conclude that he is qualified for at least a hearing, if not confirmation? >> i certainly believe that he is qualified for a hearing. he has been a distinguished jurist for 13 years on the d.c. circuit court, and i found his answers to demonstrate that he's thought deeply about the issues, that he's highly intelligent, and that he's a careful, meticulous judge. having said that, i would, of course, not make a final decision on his nomination until there were public hearings because it's that kind of in-depth vetting that gives you the information that you need. >> ifill: as you know, your colleague, senator mark kirk of illinois, last week also met with judge garland and came away and said that he felt that his colleagu

luke russert joins us on capitol hill, and we're also joined by michael steele, who worked for a pro-jeb a good nose for up there. what do you smell? i want this on record, what do you smell about the movement's behavior, whatever, about the speaker you cover? is he hoping to get drafted? >> well, the establishment certainly would love for him to emerge from a contested convention and grab that mantle, chris, but everyone within his operation here on capitol hill, his pac and outside group, they're all very tight-lipped and said no, no means no, he cannot grab this nomination, because he has not run for president. he has not gone after the money, he has not gone state from state, he can't do it. when people bring up the analogy to the speaker's race, i think it's worth a discussion as to why it's different. when the speaker's race occurred, ryan said no. mccarthy went forward. mccarthy pulled out unexpectedly. ryan was forced into it. boehner gave him catholic guilt. they had cardinal dolan call him up and say, you have to do it. the difference with the presidential, cruz and trump have
